question about eliminating fuel fuel pulsation dampener

I have about 1100 miles on a rebuilt engine. Yesterday I filled the gas tank for the first time. Five minutes later I parked the car left the fans running and went inside. Came back out in ten minutes and smelled alot of fuel. I popped the hood and saw a fuel line spewing gas from under the uim. Do I have a bad fuel line hose? Or am I having a problem with fuel pressure because I eliminated the fuel pulsation dampener?

Thanks

You're not going to know unless you remove the UIM and take a look. It could be any number of things. Remove the UIM and prime the fuel system.

http://robrobinette.com/release_fuel...0Fuel%20System

This will keep the fuel pump running without running the engine. You should then be able to locate your leak.

I did that today. It looks like I cut the hose by tightening the clap to much.

I would suspect that the clamp has not been pushed back far enough on the fitting if overtightening caused a leak.

Let's hope so. As fuel leaks go that would be a not destructive and cheap fix.

I would replace the pulsation damper anyway. Ether get an OEM one or there are 4 other options. I have the Garfinkle kit.

1.stock
http://rx7.com/store/rx7/fdfuelpulsationdamper.html

2. Drill and tap the primary rail

http://www.banzai-racing.com/pd_elimination_how-to.htm

3. Garfinkle fuel rail addapters

4.banzai fuel rail addapter.

Its not leaking now.

But I was wondering if the full tank of gas made extra pressure, and not having a fpd to control it made the hose leak.

Or is that not how the fpd works?

The FPD does not regulate pressure. (The FPR does that). The FPD is a rubber bladder alongside the fuel flow to reduce variations in fuel pressure seen at the rail. Many people have eliminated it without issue.

Incorrectly sized fuel hose would be a major problem. It should grip enough that the clamps are only there for backup.

If you're not careful you'll burn the car down. Fuel leaks are serious.

Make sure you have fuel injection rated hose, the low pressure cheap fuel/emissions hose is only rated at 50psi. With the base pressure on the car being 38-40psi, stock boost levels raise the pressure to the upper rating of the cheap emissions hose.

Fuel Injection Hose SAE J30R9 is $5-$6 per foot you will know there is a problem if it is only $1/ft.

We see cars come in from other "shops" with the wrong hose all the time. Amazing what some places will do to save a few dollars. They need to stop and think about the lives they are putting at risk.

100% agree with you here. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, it's very unfortunate and helps lead to the image of unreliability. One of the reasons why the good shops always seem to have a waiting list to take in cars.

It's not complicated guys---- fuel injection hose typically has just that written on the side, along with the max working pressure of around 150 psi IIRC. Cory, I've found it in almost any Pep Boys/Advance/Napa/Autozone in the central/northern NJ area that we live in over the last five years.

The pep boys in parsippany does have it, they sell it in small lengths (like 6-12 inches) in the back near all the oil and coolant.

In my neck of the woods, NAPA sells the higher rated fuel injector hose.

A better option than wandering around chain stores that may or may not have what you need

Or, if you really want your engine bay to look trick (and improve safety) use steel tubing
