question about ecu and a few upgrades.

I am replacing my ecu and purchasing downpipe, boost controller, and intake system. They are small improvements now, but eventually I want to keep adding as I get money to do so. I doubt i ever go with a single turbo, but I plan on going with upgraded twins and I don't want to buy another ecu after this one.

My questions are
1) Can i safely tune my ecu at home? If so which ecu be best for my needs listed above and most user friendly?

2) Does dealerships tune cars(mazda)?

If you don't want to have to buy an ECU after this one, get a tuneable one. i.e. Power FC, Haltech, or AEM. However, a Pettit or M2 ECU should suit your needs for now just fine.

You can tune your car at home, if you have a wideband O2 sensor and are willing to learn a lot. Personally, I was much too terrified of blowing my engine.

Dealerships will not tune your car, in fact if you ask them to, they'll probably do a tune-up for you. So you'll still be unsure if your AFR's are safe, but at least they'll have checked your timing belt

Any wideband with a display will be good. AFAIK a wideband is a wideband. Check out a few of these http://66.216.67.51/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=208&1=361&2=-1

Keep in mind that tuning an RX-7 yourself with no prior experience is strongly cautioned against. But if you can do it, and do it without popping your engine, more power to you.

What about the pre-tuned chips?

I would have to tow my car MANY miles to a tuner and just looking for the best option.

Also do the ecu's come with a base setting b/c my 7 isn't modified hp wise yet. Least then I wouldn't have to tow it anywhere to get it tuned and i could drive it there.

just read in another thread that the power fc w/o the commander comes stock programmed? Is that true?

Would i be able to just buy a power fc and a boost controller w/o the commander or having it tuned?

As fas as I know, the Power FC is a manual only ECU too. Good luck there.

If the PFC can be used with auto tranny's, the base setting is supposed to be for a car with a downpipe, cat-back and intake (I think, don't quote me). Your car should be driveable with the PFC and no mods, just stay outta the boost.

I remember someone was selling an upgraded ecu for auto's in the For Sale section not too far back. You can always call Pettit, M2, or whoever re=programs them if they can work on your auto ecu.

*You wouldn't have to tow the car anywhere if you got a programmable ecu. Just don't install it until you get to the tuner

Try to get a used PFS purple box. itll allow you to tune as you get upgrades, works with the auto (and retains the hold feature), and isnt terribly hard to tune. Also they've been out for a while so support shouldnt be a problem. You should be able to get one for less than $500 (used).

Its cheap enough to buy now to get you car going until you decide what you want to do. This way you dont rush your decision.
