proper way to drain oil coolers?

hi, im picking up my R1 tommorrow.

first thing im going to do is check all fluids, and change the oil.

i was wondering, what's the proper way to drain both oil coolers?

pics/detailed instructions would be great.

also, what oil is most commonly used? and how much does the FD hold?

there is no way unless you unhook them and drain them out but that would be just stupid, just drain the oil like normal and refill it and do it often enough so its not a problem. in anycase a base fd takes about 4.5 quarts just about, not sure if the extra oilcooler makes a difference. id just start it up after filling 4.5 and let it run a bit and then shut her off and check the level with the dip stick.

as for what type, its really up to you, i use the cheapest oil i can find because i change it so often.

im planning to change every 2k miles, that often enough?

i was told you have to drain the oil coolers for everything to function properly.

i used castrol gtx 20w50 non-synthetic on my n/a FC's........same thing for the FD?

i use to use the castrol gtx 20/50 all year round but it burns a lot of it up... i switched to the blue chevron oil that says turbo on it and i get to my next oil change (1.5k... new motor) without having to fill it again.... my .02

I use Royal Purple Synthetic 20W50 oil. Very satisfied and does not evaporate as easyly as normal mineral or synthetic oil.

You can some oil out of the driver side oil cooler, if you jack up the right front, then drain. The angle of the car will help get some of that oil out. I imagine you could then jack up the left side to get some out of the left cooler.

what is the ambiant temp where you live? if its above 60F. 20w50 is probally just fine, if its like freezing, id go with a thinner oil like 10w30.

every 2k is fine but i personnaly change it sooner then that, thats just me though

Just drain the oil once a week for a month, that should get some fresh oil to the coolers and flush the old out.

I use 10w30 Red Line and my god what a difference compared to even 20-50 Mobile (non synthetic) i use to use. The mobile could not put up with the heat of miamis typical 90 degrees + The pressure would hold for about a week after the oil change and get low after that. Im running 2 months now with the red line, and the oil pressure is like clock work. I highly recommend it.
