I paid $75 from Mazda, but suspect the shop was not too good at it.

However, if you get a great price, be sure they took the time to properly warm the engine or else the results will be a waste. This step is probably the longest step for them.

Yeah, it's really easy to do. I would never pay someone to do it.

When I called a Mazda dealership in Frisco they quoted me for $450 just for a damn test. Now that is ridiculous!

what the ****,
$450 for a compression test IS ******* robbery,
that's not even huffed up dealer charges.. that is definetley someone trying to con you out of your hard earned dollar.

I do a compression test on my honda every few weeks..
tester cost me like 17bucks
basically i pull all the spark plugs, pull one fuse so it doesnt inject fuel,
then go from plug hole to plug hole, crank the motor and i get a reading..

easy as pie

To get accurate compression test results on all 3 faces of the rotor you will need a rotary specific compression tester. Last I heard they cost around 1500 bucks.

To do it the cheap way, just go to the auto parts store and buy a normal compression gauge and make sure to remove the one-way valve so you can watch the needle bounce back and forth as the rotor turns. If you get even bounces when turning the engine over, then you should be OK.

when doing a test with the el cheapo auto parts store compression tester, or any tester for that matter i guess, is it essential to have both plugs (one on each rotor) pulled or can can you just remove the one you are tesing, replace it and repeat for the other rotor?
also, the cheap kit comes with a "long" 14 and a the standard 14. I assume the long 14mm is what is used on the fd.
thanks
eric

Every place I've asked (including for other non-rotary cars) quote me $100 - $250.
