Power Steering Fluid

I searched the archives but couldn't see anything about PS fluid. On my last car I had to use Auto transmission fluid because it was a very high pressure system. Should I be using auto transmission fluid (like Dextron III) in the PS or just normal PS fluid?

Owners manual and workshop manual call for Dexron II ATF. I couldn't find this in the local auto parts stores but the Dexron III bottles all said compatable with Dexron II.

Because power steering fluid is just ATF with a higher price.

Dexron III ATF is fully backwords compatible w/ Dexron and Dexron II ATF (but NOT the otherway around), The clear PS fluids may or may not be compatible w/ DEXRON (red) fluids, Those that are not compatible will quickly destroy the seals in the system and also cause high wear on the pump and stearing box of a DEXRON system (and vice/versa) The PS in th FD is a DEXRON based system and should be refilled w/ DEXRON II or III. (DEXRON II is almost imposible to find any more) there is also DEXRON IV on the market now that is a SYNTHETIC Base version of Dexron III (costs 3 times as much and my DAKOTA takes 9 qts of it in the Trans ) idk If it would be ok as a PS fluid.

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies, I will use the Dextron III I bought, just didn't want to put it in if it was the wrong fluid but it sounds like it will be fine provided it does not have any compatibility issues with what is already in there. It's quite low but I am pretty sure it is a red fluid so it is probably something similar to Dextron III.
