power pass redline

Anyone else have this issue?

I constantly over rev my car. Because I have a hard time feeling where redline is, so as a result it's constantly bouncing off the rev-limiter whenever I give it gas. The car feels like it just keeps making power pass 8,000.

I have two dyno's, one in 3rd gear and one in 4th gear and they both indicate that my peak power is where the dyno stops (~8k), which mean that the power curve is really shifted to the right.

off topic, but are the dyno numbers in your sig corrected or uncorrected? I'd be interested in seeing your dyno plots.

3rd gear

sticking valve in y-pipe replaced, RPM not read so no torque value is given.

But what does the boost look like?

If the boost is continuing to climb due to the wastegate that is why you're most likely feeling more power - when in essence the engine is taking a serious beating with stock turbos.

Nice high-end power after 6500, is your motor ported? Do you have a boost plot?

Hey Teddy,

My car feels similar to what you are describing (when it's working that is). I let my father drive it over the summer one day to feel the difference from his Z06. He floored it getting onto the highway from 2nd gear. I had to tell him to shift into third as he had no idea he was bouncing off the rev limiter. He said the car just kept pulling so he didn't think about shifting (and the exhaust was too loud with the windows down to hear the buzzer).

Teddy you ported?

I noticed my stock engine would die off at 8000- but my ported motor wants to keep going forever..... Im still making power at 8500-9000

After getting a street port I routinely slam into the fuel cut.

There is a definite shift to the right in the power curves. With the street port the car pulls VERY hard right up to the redline/fuel cut.

yep....rotary's love making power past redline. Try a T-45S and big intake/exhaust ports...talk about overlap. No wonder I shift at 9500~

Yes there is power past the stock redline.

Your stock bearings and stationary gears won't hang with it consistently.

Who is to judge what our cars should max out at (rpm wise)? My car feels as though it is leveling out at about 8500 but my roomates car (with a streetport) seems to be pulling strong well beyond that. Jerry, the owner of the rx7 shop here in raleigh where his port was done said the car, with its new seals, would last up to about 12000 rpm. It sure feels like it could but that seems too far fetched. Could this be done?

Hahaha..

Go for it. I guess if you WILL your engine to 12000rpm it should be fine right?

what would have to be done to raise the red line in rotary? is there any way to build up the engine to handle it? or does the tranny limit it to 8k? i know with piston engines this can be done, but to a certian extent.

TURBO is the limiting factor. Stock turbo stops making power after a certain RPM...not worth it to go to 9000 rpms when you start losing power at 7500~. With the stationary gear bearings, you could go one size down with them and that should be enough to "race clearance" them. I'd worry more about clearancing the rotors. Taking .02mm of all 6 edges and it should be fine.

Do NOT try this at home, experienced (not PRO, since it's amateur racing) driver on closed course.

The SCCA rules dictate "street port" 6-port engine (meaning not bridge), so the ports are VERY large.

With VERY large ports, and absurd port timing, you get an engine that ONLY works at VERY high revs. That is why the exhaust is single, and large. -- but the dyno said it still wanted fairly small primary pipes.
Sooo - everything had to be done to attempt keeping it together that high.
Off the top of my head:
VERY lightened rotors (STARTING with lightest ones)
side cut rotors
ceramic apex seals
hardened gears
competition rotor bearings
3-window rear bearing
93 style front bearing
oil shooters in the eccentric modified
oil passages "flowed"
oil pump massaged
3 lb flywheel (yes, three)
lightened counter weights
5 1/2" double disc clutch
MSD 7AL's
Mallory coils
VERY balanced assembly
competition thrust bearings
2 oil coolers
HUGE radiator
52 mm IDA carb
very short manifold
it liked a VERY long exhaust
smallest eccentric pulley
largest water pump pulley and alternator pulley
restrictor in water hose

+ other stuff?

AND it STILL scrares the crap out of me everytime I see 10k on the tach !!

I remember reading that the stock bearings spin themselves dry above 8k but the mazdacomp-spec units are good to 9k. Can anybody confirm this?

what do the high level rotary drag cars run at? also probably doesnt hurt to be a little paranoid about the clutch and things exploding at such high rpms and killing you.

Ralphs car has a motor built by Pineapple. I don't know what type of port the motor has in it, but him and Kyle bacon (Nocab) seem to rev the crap out of em! CJ
