Well,

Once again, rain and Rx-7's don't mix... I hydroplaned last night while doing 55-60 mph during a lane change... ended up going sideways into the barrier taking out the driverside front and back of my car. I'm thinking they are going to total the car... I find out monday. Anyway, it was really cool being a part of the RX-7 community for awhile... Hopefully they'll fix it. Talk to you all soon....

I can feel for you man, the second day I had my FD I slid out doing about 50mph on a uphill turn. It was raining and I was comming from a car with only ~50-80hp weighting in at about 4000lbs. These cars should come with a warning about driving in the rain, I guess our cars are just too light. I hope everything works out for you!

That ALMOST happend to me. It had snowed the night prior and melted during the day THEN froze during the 20degree night. I was going slow, about 20 mph, taped my breaks to test things, (yes i am a DUMBASS) and complealy spun out. If it wasnt for the snow and gravel on the side of the road i would have hit the stone bankment. I was terrified.

But just because you dont have an RX7 doesnt mean your not welcome here. YOU KNOW THAT!

same thing happened to my dad when he was driving my FD.

 

Bridgestone Potenza SO2PP or SO3PPs are your friends.
I can even hit the second turbo in the rain without spinning.

I hear that JimLab is putting these on his beast.

 

When I first got the FD, I almost spun out in the rain making a right turn, but since I had experience with a previous beast, I knew how to control it, and it was actually pretty fun

Hey old timer, what's the difference between the two? I'm looking for good rain tires(since Okinawa's only Hot or Wet).

 

I'm sorry to hear that man. I hope they total your car cause I doubt you will want it after its repaired, with that much damage it'll never be the same. You'd be better off getting another one.

Very good rain tires like the S02pp and SO3pp listed above and the Donlop 9000's are a MUST on a fd unless you want to end up off roading your car.

Sp-03's are great tires, my brother has them on his car and I got his old Nitto 450's (BTW: Don't buy these unless you like drifting!) You will definantly want these tires. It has been about 2-3 months since he has gotten them and he still is picking up rocks (road gravel) because they are so sticky. It's kinda like a little rooster tail, the kind that Unlimited hydroplanes make but with small rocks.

These are definantly not good for his paint/rear 1/4 panels but are great for clawing around tight corners. I have not seen him kick his rear end out once yet, even in the rain.

Nitto 450's are peices of crap on the other hand. These tires are so slippery that all I have to do is put it in to first and give it about 15-20% throttle around a corner and they will start to spin like crazy and they have lots of threads left! Personnaly, I never go above 35mph in the rain anymore since the second day I got my car, I got about 2-3 inches from the sidewalk and thats just too darn close for me while sliding at 50mph.

i have yokohama avs and they grip like a *****.i cant even get a chirp out of them.they just grab the ground and launch my ***.even with a 4000 rpm launch they were throwing me forward.they stock tires i had on the car couldnt even hardly launch at 3500 rpms.i had to let off the throttle then hit it again.

 

DON'T get Pirelli P7000 Super Sports!!!! I have those and spun across 95 South and was missed by an 18 wheeler by no more than 18 inches! Unfortunately the concrete wall was there to catch me.

 

These are the tires I have on mine and I highly recommend them. Extremely sorry to hear about the FD. Good luck with the insur.

 

I ment that I still got a lot of rubber left, they are nearly new.

 

I just got S-03s put on my FD (upgrade from 7000 SS) and they stick like glue! I have a gravel driveway (well, sort of. It used to be paved...but is 'deteriorating'). Anyway, when I pull in my tires become covered in gravel. These are some seriously sticky tires. And yes, they handle the rain almost as well as they do the dry. Very nice.

 

I put some S-03s on my FD last week, because of their wet handling rating. I haven't had a chance to find out yet...

 

Sorry to hear about the crash. If the car is totalled, perhaps you can buy it back and either part it or get it fixed up yourself.

About tires, if you want to save some money and don't mind tire noise, Yoko A520 is very sticky as well. It's almost as good as S02 in grip but it's loud. At about $110 each, it's a good value tire that offers good grip in dry and rain. I've driven 100+ MPH in rain with these and they are solid. Obviously, I don't do 100+ for very long, just for passing and short bursts occasionally.

 

Ulator, what tires do you have on the car, how much tread is there, and how old are they? Also, what size were you running? Harder compound tires and old tires don't stick very good, especially for the FD which is light.
