Well, normally I wouldn't have to.

Generally, you seem to have a good head on your shoulders, but attacking someone for stating what is most likely true about hacking the roof off an FD, especially when you're sticking up for a shop you seem to know very little about and don't have firsthand knowledge yourself is more than justification for rolling my eyes. You chose the losing side of this argument from the start. At this point it would probably be the better part of valor to concede that you don't have all the facts and just call it a day.

I like to be the devils advocate. It gives me some entertainment ruffling feathers. TV is a waste of time and my FD is running 100% right now, so I have nothing else to do

ohh don't worry. Before I go to bed tonight I will dance around in a circle and chant to the rotary gods that a vacuum hose will not split tomorrow.

Also, just the motor is running perfectly... the rest of it is in the shithole

Honestly, the only negative that I can see is the added weight. A few hundred pounds isn't going to throw the handling in the *******. I have seen 300 pound guys hop in a FD. Thats the same thing right there. The company that does these out in So Cal has been converting cars for a long time. I think they would know what needs to be strengthed. Search around, their website is out there.
I drove that Fuschia colored FD3 convertible owned by Yang in Md. It handled like ****, all loose and such on the structure.

That's odd. I searched for "convertible" in the 3rd Generation Specific forum and came up with these threads...

You guys are all just blowing smoke. Sounds like most of you wouldn't know how to change your own oil. I have been there, done that and I understand the problems. Look here for my credentials:

http://rx7.org/ThisMonths/Sep97/

I have done numerous customs and I built the convertibles shown in that web site. But the 1st gen car is a very simple chassis by comparison. To cut the roof off a 3rd gen car is a much riskier project, because the car is much, much more sophisticated in its structural design and in its suspension. Any shop that has done things like Ferrari Daytona convertible conversions might be worth talking to. But if anyone quoted me less than $25 - 30k to build a convertible 3rd gen, I would assume the guy is not competent.

If you really want a convertible you should sell your RX7 and buy a Corvette. I would not have said that few years ago, but the guys at Chevrolet have finally figured out how to do it right. You will not likely build a convertible RX7 that can compete with a new 'vette.
