Those arent real convertables. They are regular RX7's with the roof chopped off. Mazda never made an FD convertable. Without the roof, the RX7 loses most of its rigidity, making it handle like ****.

Most people say that an FD convertable looks like a miata. I agree. If you want an good handling convertable, get a miata, leave an RX7 alone. I honestly dont like the look of it too much. Some people do. I'm not telling anyone what to think, just stating my opinion.

I mean, it cant be that bad to have no roof on a hot summer day, cruising along at 100+ mph.

Is that FD convertible out of Maryland??

I knew someone that had one that looks exactly
like that one. same color and rims.
Those rims are 20" ?

anyways if it is the car.. It was bought used for like
24K back in 95. The conversion itself costed like 15K.
and added several hundred pounds to reinforce
the undercarriage and etc.. Car was converted
out in Cali somwhere.

IMO: Convertible FD's look badass.. You may think its
a miata from a distance.. But trust me, you won't
mistake it for a miata as you get closer.. and when
you do realize its a convertible FD, instant hardon...

Granted it makes the car slower and handle worse.
but its still bad aass.. Now imagine that convertible
with a 20b turbo, or a single turbo 13b w/500rwhp
with a 99front bumper, side skirts and 99 wing..

ya know, that last part kinda changed my mind a little bit. I mean yeah, it might suck at handling, but you could always fix that. And the idea of a 20B in a convertable just sounds awesome.

I'm gonna have to re-werd that post.

How do you have proof about this?? Did you know the guys that did this to their car? Do you own a covertible FD? It's just another hear-say fact people love to spew.

Honestly, the only negative that I can see is the added weight. A few hundred pounds isn't going to throw the handling in the *******. I have seen 300 pound guys hop in a FD. Thats the same thing right there. The company that does these out in So Cal has been converting cars for a long time. I think they would know what needs to be strengthed. Search around, their website is out there.

Do you have proof that it's not true?

Cars originally offered as convertibles have one thing in common. They were either specifically designed as convertibles from the ground up to compensate for the lack of rigidity that results from eliminating the roof, or they've got a bunch of brackets bolted to the underside to try to accomplish the same thing.

The sport roof (targa) version of the MKIV Supra has extra bracing to try to stiffen the car, but with the roof panel off, it still twists like a wet noodle. With more horsepower, the effect is simply amplified.

A guy from my hometown had a Mustang that had been converted to a convertible. On a lift, the doors couldn't be opened because the chassis flexed enough to keep the latches from working. With the doors open, it drooped badly at front and rear.

When custom shops cut the roof of a car to section it or chop it, they weld in temporary bracing to keep the car's geometry correct and prevent sagging or spreading.

You can believe what you want, but cutting the roof off a car designed as a coupe is not a good idea, and compensating for altering the structural rigidity of the car isn't a trivial task.

I think they would know what needs to be strengthed.
They couldn't possibly be one of thousands of hack shops across the country who would chop the top off and make it look good enough, then turn someone loose in it without having any idea what they'd just done to the integrity of the car...

I tried searching for the company but can't find the site. They aren't just some ghetto chop shop in Compton. They work on Ferrari's as well.

And? Just because they work on Ferraris doesn't mean they're qualified to cut the roof off an FD and make it structurally sound.

no kidding!
Just as an example of rigidity in the FD think about the extra support that is incorporated just with the sunroof on the tourings.
A lot of extra support up there, and that is just a hole in the roof!
Deleting the roof would be very detrimental to the overall rigidity of the entire chassis.

Man its so ugly!!!! why o why do you have to mess with something that's not designed to be like that?? O well whatever. Targa looked alright but think of what its doing to the stiffness of the body.......talk about massive body roll after that's been done.

Work on Ferraris as in doing the same conversions as the FD. Not just changing the oil.

I don't care if you don't believe me. I saw the pics awhile back and didn't understand why anybody would do that either. Don't roll your eyes at me, I didn't hack the roof.
