The verdict?

It's a piggyback ecu (meaning you use your stock ecu in addition to the purple box) and very old technology. It all depends on your mods.

If you only have one or two power mods, stock ecu is fine. Once you go past that, and up the boost a bit, it's not a bad option if you're looking to spend a small amount of cash, vs the grand for a pfc.

Does the PFS purple do anything to solve 3k hesitation?

Nope, it just works with the stock ECU, so many of the limitations and problems of the stock ECU stick around. You also can't upgrade injectors, unless you go 850/1300 and dial the fuel way down.

It would have to be REAL cheap. For the money, I'd go with a chipped ECU instead - they're going for $200 or less used, have good, solid maps they come with, and give you lots of headroom for some safe power. The PMC needs to be programmed, and who knows how the previous owner had it set up.

The most knowledgeable person I found on the Pink ECU was Wade. Luckly I copied most of everything on his website before its demise. This is a qoute from his PMS Faq.

12. Can I use the PMS to fix the 3000 RPM hesitation or other RX-7 drivability
problems?

Not really. A drivability problem caused by an underlying problem (such as the
3000 RPM hesitation that plagues many RX-7s) can't be "fixed" in piggyback mode
because changes that are essentially added to the stock computer's outputs. The
only true way to fix a problem like this is to fix the underlying problem, or
run Standalone mode (which really isn't practical with the current RX-7 PMS
versions).

Here is a way to fix the 3k hesitation for RX-7s.

Perform the O2 sensor "hack". Experimentation by RX-7 owners has proven that if
the stock computer reads no O2 sensor signal, it will usually not have the 3K
hesitation problem. So preventing this signal from getting to the stock computer
can be a fix.

Some people just cut the O2 signal wire, disconnect the O2 sensor at the
firewall (a 30 second ordeal), and some cut the wire between the PMS harness and the stock ECU. Cutting the wire in this location will allow the user to monitor/datalog the O2 sensor value for his own use, but will still have the desired effect on the stock ECU. I did this and soldered a couple of new wires
in the PMS harness so I could easily reconnect the line in the future if I needed.

Because the stock ECU will not try to go into closed loop mode, some partial
throttle adjustments (leaning) will usually need to be made. I have found that
removing about 10% of the fuel from the lower and medium loads makes the car run the best. You'll have to experiment.

A benefit of this "hack" is the stock ECU will not try to do any "learning."
This means that changes made to the partial throttle tables will not be
un-learned by the stock ECU. This method can work to fix a variety of
drivability problems. Since some moderate fuel system changes, my car would tend to learn bucking anywhere below 3K RPM shortly after resetting the stock ECU.
Since cutting the line between the PMS and the stock ECU I haven't had the
problem.
