Question Overboosting all of a sudden

Greetings everyone,

I'm hoping someone might be able to shead some light on my situation.
All of a sudden my primary turbo is boosting to about 15 psi (13-14 was normal) then at the transition it jumps to 20 psi, my boost gauge warning lights go off, my J&S looks like a friggen' christmas tree! Needless to say I let off the throttle as fast as I can. My pertinent mods are PFS purple (max boost @13 psi in menu 9, vent learn on) DP, Hi Flow Cat, CB, Intake, Pettit Coolcharge II IC and HKS ignition. I have not done any recent mods at all, so I haven't changed anything to cause this.
I'm not near my manual but I suspect one of the solenoid valves that attach to the front of the UIM might be sticking (for some reason).
Has anyone ever had these symptoms? If so, what was the fix.
Thanks guys,

Make sure all the hoses are hooked up to your wastegate actuator and the pre-control actuator. If one of them is off that can cause it.

Yep, your wastegate is not opening. First thing to check would be the hose running from the primary turbo housing to the wastegate actuator.

Yep, that's what I kinda' figured too. I'll definetely check it out when I get home. This would be about the time a Z06 or Viper will get next to me and want to play

same thing was happening to me when it got cold here. I got the same Ecu and similar mods. I don't know what was going on, but i switched to profec for boost controller. I don't have that problem anymore, but now i have problem with keeping boost steady and at 12psi

Similar thing happened when my cheap silicone hoses that were used for the wastegate and pre-control were melted.. I hit 22lbs.. I couldn't believe the engine didn't blow..

I can't say enough for boost gauge warning lights and the J&S. I'm pretty used to things getting crazy at the transition, wheels spinning and alot of noise, but 20+psi is a little more than I'm ready for. If it wasn't for my warning lights and spark retard I'm sure my foot would have still been to the floor. 2nd gear kinda' freaked me out this morning when the rear started stepping out at 30 MPH instead of 40, I looked down and saw all kinds of red lights flashing back at me. Anyhow, I feel lucky for now.
I'll post back here when I trace down the actual problem, might take a couple days as I have to get Phil's project done

Thanks for everyones input.

Frank

While that does invoke a certain amount of testosterone laden emotions I'll try to refrain.
As it was, I made it home without so much as an integra looking to play, well except for the Ford Probe on the freeeway, but it was easy enough at only half throttle on the primary turbo and primary injectors to stay away from him

If your motor didn't pop you're one lucky son of a gun. But I'll agree with everyone else, sounds like the wastegate isn't opening up. Good luck and keep us posted.

I know. I was expecting my car to idle like crap and die when I pulled up to the first stop sign after this happened. Being a borderline paranoid pessimist (being an FD owner will do that to a person) I expected the worst. As it is now my car still idles good and has good vacuum. I'm still surprised the stockers can make that much boost in such a short amount of time, much less that much boost at all!

Any turbo can produce that much boost, difference is it's just nothing but cooked air

It turns out it was the hose to the wastegate actuator. Turned out to be about a 2 hour job though. Drive the car up on (2) thick 2 x 4's, jack up and put on stands, remove the under tray, clean out 2 dead birds that were trapped in there, only to discover that I couldn't see anything wrong from below.
I then removed the upper intake hoses and air pump hoses and the BOV, remove the lower intake to turbo hose and voila!, a 1" split in the hose from my needle valve boost controller to the nipple on the front of the turbo. Swapped it out, put on my M2 hard pipes (that front turbo pipe is a b!tch to install!).
Needsess to say it's running like a champ again, 12 PSI on the primary, 13-14 on the secondary.
Thanks for the insight guys.

Regards,
Frank

nice job those 2 guys were right on and thats what I was thinking too...after that I thought maybe his cat blew out but that wouldnt cause so much boost maybe 2-3 more psi

you are lucky you got those gauges ive always wanted them. If I had those id still have my motor. I hit ~35psi and had no idea because it just felt fast and I hadent driven it in 3 days so I forgot.
