Opinions on a 94

Im currently looking at a 94 rx7, base model. I just want some opinions on weather its a good buy or not

1994 RX-7 auto/silver/base model
57,000
Carfax showed it was clean
Failed smog last June, but passed the next day
no real visible scratches intil you look real close
no real visible dent untill you look real close

the price im tryin to get it for is 18,000, after taxes, and including a 3 year 36k mile warranty extension

Now for those who care. . .heres a little more detailed info for you.

I found the car at my local Mazda dealer, and Ive been tryin to test drive this thing since tuesday, but there has been an "idle" problem and they have been waiting to get in the shop. I went at lunch today and they let me drive it even with the problem. So i get it out of the parking lot and step on it. With no exageration, i think a KIA would have beat it off the line and through the intersection. But then the first turbo kicks in and it pulls hard but then levels off. I turned on the AC at a stop sign, and the thing died. Even at higher speed (70-80) it didnt have much pull. The car in general felt pretty tight and didnt have any strange noises. But the performance was not what i was expecting. Im assuming this is not just because its an automatic trani.
They seem to think its some kinda sensor, but havent got to check it out yet. I know that in many of the post and articles i have ready, vacume lines can be a real problem, and thats almost what im thinkin. Im pretty familiar with a standard engine, even used to be a mechanic. But the whole rotary thing is not a strong point for me, nor are turbos. so i dont know what to really listen for. I have heard rumors of having to replace motors at 60k so that scares me a little.
Im thinking that I could get a pretty good deal on this, especialy if a 3year warranty is included in this 18k price. But tell me what you guys think. Oh yeah, this car was built in japan. . .come to think of it i think all the 94s were. . . . .anyway Im not sure if this is worth anything, but i know with other vehicles, the areas that they were build some times gives you an idea of the quality of how it was put together.

Thanks a Million
Jasen

Just based on my looking for a 94 or a 95 for myself, that price is high for an automatic. It sounds like this rx7 also has at least some minor problems.

At the very least, check out the price of other autos in camparison with manual 94s at cars.com and autotrader.com.

Also check out the cars at l a m o t o r c a r s without the spaces and a .com on the end. You can see a nice looking white 94 with 55k miles for 16k. Includes a warranty.

I'm nowhere near an expert on this, but I think you should do some more research before you go for it.

18,000 bucks for 57k ...probably the first engine waiting to blow. Not to mention all the other issues, honestly, not worth it for that much. Go find one with a blown engine for 9,000 and fix it up. Also, if you ain't got the money to fix the 7 or if you use it as a daily driver, don't do it...gonna cost you some bucks.

No one"likes" auto for an rx-7. i'm sure everyone who buys one plans on doing some sort of tranny sway in the not so distant future.

Sounds a little high to me as well. I have also heard the the change from auto to 5-spd is not easy. If that is what you planned on doing.
PS- I bought a 7 from the dealer for 17500 with an extended warranty 5 years ago.

I got a 94 Touring manual tranny with 55k miles for 13k... You could probably find better, especially since it's having "idle problems" which could be any number of things, including a low compression engine. Try and talk em down and see what happens, or get them to completely fix it up for that price even if it takes a new engine. Otherwise keep looking, and if you want responsiveness look for an auto.

Is it by any chance the one at Reno Mazda? I was told by someone who works there that it's a real dog and they can't get rid of it. Look elsewhere, there's only one mechanic at the dealership who can work on these cars and he doesn't see very many of them.

Where and how long ago?
That a really low price, not the norm. I would consider you at least a little lucky. I'm sure searching every day for a good deal helps though. That's what I'm currently doing.

If it didn't have any problems then maybe it would be reasonable, but I'd tell them, "fix it right and call me, then we'll talk". Its probably stalling with the A/C on because it has low compression.
