Oil smells weird????
OK.... so I was checking my oil and it gave me a weird smell. It kind of smelled like gasoline. Now.... the car had a bad fuel pump so the last time I turned it on I did it by putting some gas through the throttle. I havent turned it on since and im about to put the new fuel pump. Could this be a bad thing? All help would be really appreciated. Would not like to put anything if this is bad. THANKS!!!
jajaja...nice!! thanks was just alittle scared since the car has been stopped for like 4 years and well a miracle happened LONG STORY jaja. o well thanks guys I really appreciated. THANKS!!
that's the real question that hasn't been answered, is 1500 miles overkill? I tend to think it is...based on smell alone, the oil likely hits 2-3% fuel dilution almost immediately when you're on the boost alot, so why not go all the way and change it 500? I'd like to see a UAO at 1500 showing wear metals
Funny you should mention it. I've been changing my oil every 500 miles. I don't drive the car much and oil changes are cheap. I see no good reason not to, unless the cost of a quart of oil goes crazy.

On my old engine, I had such bad fuel dilution it wasn't funny. The oil always smelled like...well, NOT oil. Wiping the dipstick was almost like wiping off water...not good.
And I changed that oil every 1500 miles.
Years later, new engine. I still change the oil every 1500 miles or so but it looks like NEW oil when I change it...it is hardly even dark. SMELLS like oil, feels like oil.
Must have been really leaky injectors and a host of other **** going on with that OEM engine before it blew.....

Why "wonder" if its good, should be good, could be good when you can just change it and not worry.
Oil is cheap, filters are cheap, its easy to do, and gives you less headaches.
I change mine religiously at 3 months regardless of miles. Whether its 500, 600, 1000 (which i never did in a 3 month period yet).
I even changed it at 100 miles before. 100 miles in 3 months, talk about not using it LOL. Well i changed the oil anyway
500 mile OCI is a little nuts
anyone tried Redline? supposedly it holds up very well to fuel dilution
I've noticed during long freeway trips when I stay off the boost and average 15:1 AFR the fuel smell is significantly reduced...I think most of it gets burned off

500 miles? That is just silly. Even if the oil isnt super expensive, that is literally 6 times more than i would change it so that means that for the life of your engine, supposing that you loose an engine to a bearing failure (how often you heard that one) that you would have spent literally 6 times as much as me on oil. Which at $4 a quart and around 4.5 quarts plus well go cheap here $6 for a filter is $24. That is also for the cheapest components here. Natural oil and cheap filters. If your engine lasts even say 60k. You will have spent $2,880 on oil changes when i will have spent $480. Do i really need to explain why this is crazy. You put synthetic in the equation and it starts to get into the territory of "you could have bought a new motor instead of all those expensive oil changes".
Just sayin.

P.S. the gas smell is totally normal.

oil actually needs a break in period before it really starts to begin to be as productive as it possibly can. Changing oil every 500 miles will not give the oil enough time to "break in" and if it did, then just as it is broke in, you are changing it. More wear on your engine if you change your oil too regularly.
I've NEVER read that, and I've read plenty of threads on BITOG and ASME stuff...provide a reference or I'm throwing the bs flag, oil does not need a "break in", that's a completely illogical assertion...it begins degrading as soon as it's in the engine
I also never heard of oil breaking in.
IIRC, the products in the oil work on temperature, for cold and hot.
As for the oil, i dont know why your oil costs soo much. I buy my oil when they go on sale and i buy alot of it to last me almost a year for both my cars for changes.
A 5.5 quart jug costs me 10.99. That COMES with a filter, i use that filter for my DD. I buy a lot of 6 filters OEM for the FD for 27 bucks. SO that equates to 4.50 bucks a filter for FD.
So 10.99 + 4.50 equals 15.49 for each change for the FD.
Since i dont drive the car much, mileage is irrelevant to your analogy so lets go by time.
Lets say YOU do 60k in 5 years. At your oil change price you would have spent, like you said $480.
AND I would have spent $309.80. This is price for FD only, i have another car so obviously i would be spending a bit more, i hope thats not what you're referring to.
61.49 a year in oil changes for the FD is NOT silly. IMHO.

the only way to know for sure is run a UOA, I suspect most synthetics are good for 2000 miles, while most dino oils are probably toast at 1000 miles in an FD under heavy boost....I'm running Mobil 1 15w-50 EP for now, but may try Redline or Motul

Speaking of fuel dilution, how many engines do you actually open up that have good condition bearings? Almost all of them have copper and serious wear marks..
