Oil seeping out from behind plugs. Metering oil pump?

I was crawling around beneath my car last night and noticed that oil seems to be seeping out from behind both sparkplugs. Obviously this is not normal...

A quick searched turned up a thread that suggested that maybe it's a faulty metering oil pump?

Anyone have any theories? Why would a faulty MOP cause oil to blow through the sparkplug ports anyway? What else should I check?

Also, total n00b question, but what are those two things BEHIND the sparkplugs that look like 2 additional sparkplugs? I looked through the FSM but I couldn't find any reference to them.

Unless you have a single rotor, they're spark plugs. You are counting four, right?

Ah....no. I thought there were only two.

I've only had this car for a few weeks, and I haven't gotten around to changing the plugs yet.

Damn, I knew it was a dumb question, but not THAT dumb. :embarrassed:

Obviously I still have a shitload to learn......

Any idea about the leaking oil? It's only coming out from the two forward plug ports. The other two look normal.

It's normal if you haven't torqued your spark plugs in properly. If it is indeed coming from the plug holes.

You didn't look thoroughly enough through the FSM. The Wankel has two plugs per rotor, one primary "leading" and one secondary "trailing". I strongly recommend reading up a bit more on your car.

It's definitely the plugs. There may be other leaks elsewhere but I know for certain this is one trouble spot. I'll replace all 4 this weekend and torque properly to see if that clears up the oil seepage.

I strongly recommend reading up a bit more on your car.
Yes, I think my need to do that has been firmly established.

it could be some oil like stuff leaking out of the knock sensor as well. knock sensor is right above the plugs in the front rotor housing.

I also think it is likely that the insulation in your knock sensor is melting down on the plugs. It should be fairly easy to tell, the 'goo' coming from the knock sensor is dark, thick, and sticky.

You may want to check the area around where the oil filter screws into. The oil filter screws down into a housing which is held on by two 10mm nuts. Inside there is 2 "0" rings that usually harden with age and allow oil to leak past them. That could be you problem as well.

Clean the area off and take you car for a long drive and check it again. I have had to change those o-rings on 2 of my 3 RX-7's i have ever owned, its pretty common.

I 5th on the knock sensor goop, by the way please have someone mechanical help you with the car, these cars need constent attention. If you have to pay for it to be done right. Its usally cheaper than doing it twice yourself or braking something else in the process.
My advise be for wrenching your self on the car, is to read as much as possible before you do what ever it is you are going to do. In clueding changing spark plugs thes thing relie on them and they need to be changed offten.

Don't be embarrassed, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask, especially with these cars. Nobody here cares. We help each other as best as we can!
