Oil pressure...

As the second owner, I just received a 1994 RX7 as a gift from my brother...the car was bought new in August 94 and have only 50K miles. Car is in exceptional condition...all stock and never raced.

Rotary engine is all new to me ( I am a Ford Mustang freak)...my concern is the oil pressure...sometime the gauge will show only 3-5 psi of pressure when engine is under 2000 rpm...but once car speed pickup (50 mph up) pressure will increase to normal zone (60 psi)...I know the manual said oil pressure is vary depending on speed but 3-5 psi seem low to me.

Also does the RX7 have some sort of device to cool down the turbos after a long drive or I just have to let the car idle for at least 30 seconds?

Thanks.

The oil pressure gauge is known to have a finicky sender. Mine ususally idles at 20psi and at WOT I will see upwards of 80psi.

If your fluid levels are fine, and the car was always well maintained I wouldnt concern myself too much about it. You could always get an aftermarket unit to get accurate readings.

The car does not have a built in system (Turbo Timer) for cooling the turbos. I usually am not concerned with them burning the oil in the bearings with my typical driving (Under 4000rpm)... if I start jumping above that to the point I'm deep into the second turbo I usually just let the car idle for 30 seconds to a minute.

The oil pressure sender location has a tendancy to allow the sender to get dirty and send faulty readings or just fail altogether. Searching for oil pressure will pull up quite a few threads on the topic:

As for the turbo timing, the RX-7 turbos are water cooled so Turbo Timing isn't as important as it is on non-water cooled turbos.

I always assumed it was just as important, thats good to know that if I am ever in a hurry I dont have to concern myself with it so much.

What you should do for turbo cooling is this. Stay off the turbos for the last mile before you park. I had a turbo timer and took it out a few months ago.

I'm not a fan of keeping the engine running with no airflow over the radiator. Our cars have enough cooling deficiencies as it is.

tphan, do some reading around here, check out the sticky at the top of this forum for newbies to read. If that car is bone stock there are a few things you need to do immediately. Boost gauge/Water Temp gauge/Downpipe/AST.

It will all become obvious once you start reading.

There was a good discussion on this a while back, it's a good read:

I am staying off modifications...it will be too expensive.

The RX7 mainly will be a weekend cruising vehicle...I have the supercharged 408 cid 94 Cobra for racing.

Beside my wife would kill me I start tweaking the RX7.
