Oil Leaks?

How many of you have FDs that leak oil?

What are the common problem areas?

I've got a leak at the rear main seal right now, it's not very bad so I'm just leaving it alone till I get a rebuild. The 3 most common leaks are:

Rear Main Seal - $50 part, about $300 to install (have to pull tranny)

Oil Pan Gasket - $? part, about $500 installed at most shops.

Turbos - $1K+, if the turbos are leaking badly they may need to be rebuilt or replaced, figure about $1K for a rebuild or $3K+ to replace.

I've been chasing an oil leak for a couple of years now. Here the parts I've had done replaced:

-leaking oil sending unit
-throttle body intake gasket
-intake elbow rubber gasket
-oil filler neck gasket (crushed)
-oil filter O-Ring gaskets (crushed)
-rear main seal (actually not that bad upon inspection)
-stationary gear seal (hardened and crusty)
-turbo oil return line gaskets (leaking badly).

After all this I still have oil leaking. I'm looking into some oil lines coming from the turbos that run just above the steering rack.

Perhaps, I have leaking turbos? The turbos are still showing good boost pattern (10-8-10), if they are leaking?

Perhaps, do you have an excessive amount of oil in your intake piping? There should be a small amount, but if you have large pools than you might want to explore that avenue. Usually though bad turbos don't "leak" oil onto the ground, they leak oil into the intake system which then gets burned, you'll see excessive exhaust smoke with this. However they might also leak if they are cracked. I can't say for sure though, I've never had that problem.

I have had my rx-7 for 5 years and I have had a small (dime size after it sits for a day or two) leak for 5 years. I have resealed the oil pan twice and i now believe it is the rear seal or the oil metering pump. I had a second gen for 13 years and that thing always had a small leak too. I guess I am just used to it. Kinda like radial aircraft engines-they always leak.

oil filter pedestal
oil pressure sender unit
