Noises from rear diff after AT to MT swap
Noises from rear diff after AT to MT swap
The FD I bought was originally an automatic that was swapped to a manual.
There is a noise kind of like a clunk that comes from the rear, I'm guessing the diff, of the car every time I shift. This happens regaurdless of how I am driving or shifting, whether it be driving it hard at keeping it above 5k, or daily driving in the 2-3k range the noise is still there!
Also, when the car is in neutral with the clutch disengaged there is a very slight grinding sound - it is very feint and it increases as RPMs increase. If I put the clutch pedal to the floor or put it in gear the noise stops. Any ideas of what is wrong with the car?

The clunk is probably a bad diff mount, but could also be a broken PPF, bad pillowball joints, or bad motor mount.
The grinding whining sound is a damaged tranny input shaft bearing. Many FDs have this with no major ill effects, but it does mean you should watch your tranny more closely for other signs of bearing wear. The fix is a tranny rebuild.

My FD has the same problem but......with 1 more added bonus. The gear console heats up, i mean like really really hot man everytime i drive it hard. i cant find a trustworthy mechanic yet back here as i just got the car 2 months back.
Agreed. I had a constant clunk at one point no matter what; accel, braking, bumps, turns, etc.. It turned out that several pillowballs were bad. All clunks went away after replacing them. Interestingly enough, the diff mounts were fine.
I guess its time for a new tranny! Or rebuild, whichever is more cost efficient.
How hard is it to replace the pillowballs?
