Okay, so it sounds like marbles bouncing around in a metal box -- a metallic clanking sound. Is that right?

Where is the sound coming from?

Does it make the noise while cranking, or did you actually get the car started and you are hearing this noise as the engine is idling?

Is it rhythmic or random?

Help us help you by expressing yourself clearly.

If its while the engine is idling, might be something loose and clanking around. He's not giving us much to go by

Word to that. For all we know it could be a wrench he left in the engine compartment, haha.

Heavy clanking sounds could be a bad main bearing or rotor bearing.... Lighter sounds could be one of the centering pins for the pressure plate has come loose and is now flying around in the bellhousing banging on things.

Could be an accessory making the noise....

Need more info.... Does the car run well besides the clanking? Is the engine shaking? Can you carefully listen and hear where it comes from?
