Question Anyone know about J-Spec RX-7??

Okay I'm about 99% sure I'm buying a J-Spec RX-7. Here is the best description about the car. Its a 1993 RX-7 with about 45,000 miles, two owners, nice set of rims and tires, aftermarket fenders, hood and ground effects and spoiler. Only mods are intake, exaust, radiator and few gauges. He installed a button to start the car. It has about $3000 in stereo upgrades. It also has a custom paint job, kinda goldish orange. Thats about it and the owner wants $7400. You might be thinking its a lemon, but here is his situation, he's over here in Korea and he can't take the car back because its a J-Spec RX-7 and he lives in couple of days. He's taken very good care of the car and can't really tell if he's raced it or not. He said he's just driven it from work and home. He also said that he's been putting 88 octane gas, the only available at the station he was at. But now he puts premium here. He's had no problems with the car. Now here is my question, he said that the spark plugs need cleaning every six months or so, is this common? I've read and I didn't see anything about it. My one and only concern is that there is no shop in korea that knows anything about rotary engine or mazda's for that matter and so thats whats worrying me. I'll probably have it for a year and sell it or if I get stationed in Europe take it with me. Any thoughts on this situation? How different are the japanese spec vs the american rx-7? Any concerns you guys might see? If all goes well I should have the car today and I'll make sure to take some pictures of it.

A New RX-7 Owner in Korea

First off what did you mean by this: "You might be thinking its a lemon, but here is his situation, he's over here in Korea and he can't take the car back because its a J-Spec RX-7 and he lives in couple of days."

He might only be alive for a couple more days and thats why he is selling the car or he will only be alive for a couple more days because his car is a J-Spec? Either way I dont understand what you mean although $7400 seems really cheap for a 93 with that low of miles. I'm not an expert in the differences between the a-spec and j-spec cars but in 1993 I would say the only big difference would be the obvious of right hand drive. You should try to get some pics and post them here. Oh and about the spark plugs, I have never heard that before, I havent "cleaned" mine for 2 years and they are fine, I have changed the plugs however, those do go bad faster than the average car.

Sounds like a great price. I get a compression test before you buy it, just to make sure he isn't trying to stick you with a car that looks nice but has blown motor.

So i take it you are in the military? At Osan or Kunsan? My friend is over there and he has talked about it before. The only question i have is, how long are you there? If you are on a short tour why waste our money. you won't beable to take it back either! I am in Misawa and have a 92 Fd, so I am in the same boat as the guy sell his. I got my for 5k, it has a RE wide body kit, Velside rims, Redom tuned ecu (1.0, 1.1) full exhaust, dp, front mount. So what he is asking is alot for where you are. Anyway good lucky.

Actually, you can take it back. All you have to do is convert it to U.S. specs. That will cost you roughly $4K to $5K. It is well worth the money though. You should look into it. MotoRex will also import and convert the car for you, although they want $10K to $15K to do it. But I'm sure they could help you out if you really wanted to bring a J-spec FD back with you. I'm also in the Air Force and have seen friends of mine bring Skylines back with them from Kadena and Yokota. I know it can be done, but it will take a little work. Just thought I would throw that in there. Best of luck. Laterz.

Motorex does not legalize RX-7s. They ONLY legalize Skylines. So, they cannot "convert the car for you" if it is not a Skyline.

thanks for the replies... yeah i'm in the air force, osan ab... although i'm only here a year, i do need a car cause my apartment is too far and i thought this would be better than one of those beaters for $400... i just thought it was just way too cheap... i bought the car and insured it for $17,000 and the full premium coverage only cost me $700 for the year and the plan says that i get in to an accident i pay the low deductible and they pay me the $17k, atleast thats what i understood from my plan, which makes sense because there is no one in korea that knows anything about mazda's and car is useless... if all goes well, i'll be in europe after this tour or get an extention here in korea... only thing i need to get is new tires on the car... right now, i don't plan to bring the car back to the states, but that can change... the guy is doing a partial tune up for me and i'll drive it soon as i get my base license... i'll have that car washed, carpets shampooed, and interior fully cleaned for $8.00 here in korea... i'll take some pictures soon as my TMO stuff gets here and i get the car to my place... thanks guys...

happy owner
