New and would like a litte help

Hi all, well I have sold my Mustang, and have been curious about RX-7 ever sense a few years ago. (Dad owns a MR-2 and we got spanked on the interstate by a Silver TT .

But I've looked on E-bay, local dealers and its really hard to decide what to look for a ina good car. I've heard that these cars can be work, but a great joy to drive.

Is it better to find a car that is original or get one that has just got a new motor in it? I found a RX-7 locally that has got 67,000 on the chassis but 2,300 on the new motor, turbos have been rebuilt, new clutch, 3.90 gears, polished tubing, free air cleaners, Slotted rotors, etc.

But have also found a orginal 40,000 mile car that is all stock, both are about the same price.

With these cars does the MODed one really give you alot of probs, (more of a headache then its worth?)

I wouldn't be buying this car if it was my daily driver but more for a 1/4 mile, runnin the cones kind of a car. Just something to go out and have fun with.

Any advice you could give would really help, and if you know of a place that has on the net that lists RX-7's for sale other then E-bay, could you tell me where!!!

Thanks, IOWA!!!

Try doing a search for this sort of thing. There's a ton of info on this forum for exactly what you need. The search link is in the upper right corner, and you should make use of it often.

Go with the original engine especially if the prices are the same. If the car is modded you don't know who installed it, if he did it he oculd have messed stuff up. With the original engine you know basically whats up.

does that make sense...
its better to get a stock car than a modded imo.

Hey Iowa, where in Iowa are you from?

I'd probably pick one up that hasn't been messed with yet, unless you take a good look at the modded one and it's ok.

There was one red 93 I believe in Iowa City, but from what I remember he was charging too much for it... Might still be worth checking out.

IOWA..

IMO, get the MODDED car... You said the engine and turbos were rebuilt.. If so I am sure it was rebuilt with 3mm seals and etc.. Because ONe day or another you are going to want to MOD your RX7, everyone does.. And let me tell you. IT IS NOT CHEAP. Cost a fortune..
Let me break it down a little..
ECU upgrade 700-1200 easy.
Intercooler 800- 1500 easy
Downpipe 200-400 easy
Catback 350-900 easy
intake 200-500 easy
Boost controller 250-500
Midpipe 200-500
and the list goes on and on and on...
what i just mentioned are basic performance
upgrades. I havne' teven touched the Suspension
and brakes and vacuum lines...

You can very easily blow a stock motor as well
as a MODDed motor.. depending onhow you drive...

IMO instead of starting from SQUARE ONE..
Start with the MODDED one, you'll probalby be
where most of US are NOWor maybe even
further ahead.. and the money you
save from Modding yoru stock one. Do al the Reliability
mods and etc..
From what how you described the MODDED RX7
the owner seems like a Rotor head. Very serious
and obviously took good care of the car. And think
the motor and turbos already been rebuilt..
Thats saving you Thousands.. Becsue eventually
That STOCK one will have to get it done..

Remember its only a Opinion.

I agree with WhiteRXseven... I'd go with the modded RX7 - provided that the motor is in working order(not already blown). Once you get it, I'd recommend that you take it easy on the car and learn all you can about it, so that YOU don't grenade the engine hot rodding it.

Just read all you can on this board(and elsewhere) to understand the car and all the do's and don'ts. There is so much to know...

BTW, How much are they going for???

3.90 gears? Is it an automatic? Are you sure you want an auto?

I kinda wish that I bought a modded one because like white said...IT COST A FORTUNE. I got mine bone stock and slowly working my way up. If the guy knows what hes talking about then I'am sure he knows what hes doing, except he blew his engine a little early than usual. DONT GET AN AUTOMATIC. Why do 3rd gens even come automatic?

i would go with a modded one too. mostly because its as difficult to find mechanics to work on stock rx7s as it is to find mechanics to work on modded rx7s. the mechanics that can work on rx7s can work on both stock and modded with same degree of ease/difficulty. so that shouldnt be a limiting factors.

modded is better if its the same price, because its better performance (unless you want a slower/less agile car).
