New Turbo Sound...

After I installed my new twins I got that nice high pitched sound as they started spooling up etc. Today, I washed the engine and now that sound is gone. Also it seems like I'm having lag. I never had lag. It takes up to 4k rpm for me to get my 12psi.

Basically I have 3 questions.
One, Does that nice high pitched sound of turbos spooling go away after a while (because i never heard it on my old set)?

Two, could something go wrong when i wash the engine that would create this obnoxious lag?

and Three, Would a Vacuum leak cause these 2 problems together?

Thanks a lot guys.

99 turbos? all turbos make high pitched sounds

but the 99 turbos have zero clearance between snail/compressor wheel, so i could see some sort of noise for the first few runs

but i have never heard of this

sounds like a vac hose popped off when you washed the engine.

I thought so too, but which one? Now i have to go in again.

The turbos are not 99, just regular 93-95 ones.

If your boost pattern is consistant, a disconnected vacuum line is probably not your problem. The sound (turbo whine) may not be as profound as when you first did the install because the shaft bearings have recieved full lubricant/break in period.

If your rpm climb is slower and your boost pattern is lower, check for boost leak in the most susceptible areas. Good Luck

So the whine is gone now Amel? That's strange. I thought it was just a nice spool from a new set of turbos.. Bring that hunk by the house.. You can use the garage as my car is FINALLY out of it.

I don't know Jimmy, sometimes the pattern is good sometimes it isn't. I can tell you this though, instead of that Whine spooling sound, now i get a sound that sounds like air rushing out, basically a leak. But Why would it hold steady boost till redline?

I don't get it.

Did you replace the Turbo Flange gaskets with new ones?? Have you checked to see if the nuts on the flange are loose? I don't remember, do you have a 99 JSpec or Stock Y-Pipe??

Turbo Flange? What is that? I have stock y-pipe, but i don't use that plastic crossover pipe.

Also, everything worked fine before the stupid engine wash. Last time i washed engine i got stupid EGR fail on me. Now, this problem

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I meant the Turbo/Y-Pipe Flange gaskets. There are four identical gaskets but only two are on the Boost side(connects the Turbos to the Y-Pipe).

Also, check the two hoses that connect to the back of the y-pipe. The top smaller hose feeds directly from the pressure tank.

so you're still getting proper boost as you were before the wash,
and it still pulls as hard as it did before the wash?

basically did anything change aside from that sound dissapearing after you washed the engine bay?

next time bag off anything sensitive, mostly electronics.
check ur plugs and ignition system for anything wet

The sound is gone and the lag is there now. I used to get full boost by 3k or less. Now it takes up to 4k to get it.

UPDATE: I took it out for a ride tonight and here is what's going on.

If i start with primary turbo, i only get 10psi. (set at 15psi) As soon as 2nd turbo takes over i get 15psi till redline.

Basically my problem is that primary turbo is not spooling as it's suppose to. It's not creating anything over 10psi.

Now my question is, if there is a leak, how come when 2nd turbo kicks in there aren't any problems?

What could make low primary turbo but fine 2nd turbo? I never had primary turbo problems. Since i owned this car for 2 and half years now, I always had 2nd turbo problems, never first.

Any input is appreciated.
