New RX-7...
i literally just bought myself an RX-7. it's a '93 twin turbo, black, mostly stock, new motor. any tips/suggestions, etc?
i'm looking for racey-looking rims. that's thin spokes and light and whatnot

I recommend saving cash for maintenance (fuel filter/plugs/wires/coolant flush/diff and tranny fluid) and when stuff under the hood breakes (boost problems etc). Mostly stock means lots of old brittle plastic. Also, look into an aluminum rad and AST before getting something like rims which are not a necessity.

note: MOSTLY stock. new motor. didn't see much plastic, but ok. i'll check. btw, waht are common turbo FD problems? i've heard about overheating, some other stuff.

I would get a boost gauge and check your boost pattern to see if your sequential turbo system is working properly. If so, then you probably should get a few reliability mods, such as a down pipe, aluminum radiator, and aluminum ast/ast removal.
The stock sequential system has a whole bunch of actuators, selenoids, etc... a system of which a 12 year old car that has been kept stock(yeah, its been 12 years already!) most likely will have some sort of malfunction. The rubber hoses for vacuum and boost may also be worn and dry, causing cracking and loss of boost.
In short, first diagnose where you stand with your car. Rims and other appearance mods are not a wise investment if your car is running like crap, so take care of everything under the hood first. Dont try to get ahead of yourself, be patient. Read and research everything until you are sick of reading, then read some more. The search option is incredible when it comes to simple, repetitive questions.

no offense or anything, but why didn't you look up information on the car before you bought it??? not like 1/4 mile specs and all the glory stuff, but the reliability and how the car can catch on fire stuff (not often, but it has happened to members on this forum).
first thing you need to do is take the car into a rotary specialist shop, have them take a look at the engine (check compression and what not), swap out all of the fluids, and then look into getting a tie wrap job done for the vacuum lines. then look into gettin a downpipe (believe it or not, that can make the car more reliable). then get some boost and temperature gauges to make sure the car is running right and so you don't accidentally overheat it. then you can start looking into getting staged upgrades. you need to realize, these cars have the potential for a lot of power and can be monsters on the road, but only if you take very good care of it. i've owned quite a few cars, everything from civics to mustangs to subarus to mazdas, and trust me when I say that the rx7 is the diva of sports cars. trat her right and she'll amaze you every day, treat her badly and she'll make you pay in blood, sometimes literally.

Wow, lots of people seem to be giving this guy a hard time. Is that really called for? Thats kinda how i was when i first bought my fd, but thanks to a lot of people on here: Art, Mahjik, chuck, all of pettit racing, and others i have learned a LOT about my car.
Anyway welcome aboard, its a good move to get on the forum and ask questions so you can learn too. I would agree with getting a boost gauge to watch your boost pattern. Maybe buy a 60mm electronic gauge with peak/hold now to have if you later plan on really gettin some potential from the car by taking it to a road course. Itll be nice to have then.
Also lots of PM. make sure you only fill with premium in case you hadnt heard, and use 20w50 every 2,000 miles

welcome to the forum...im also kinda wet behind the ears with my turbo lump..but ive leraned alot here and on my own trial and error basis. just becarful with her and treat her like ur lady..not a one night stand...cuz the one night stand will come back to haunt you...lol
