New Rotary Owner Questions?

I just bought my first Rotary (1994 Chaste White Rx-7 Black Interior) today and I am going to go ahead and do my maintance job on it this weekend (bought the car from NC and just arrived at my house today). I plan on changing the oil, replace coolant, and fuel filter. Note that I will be checking the fan belt tension and hoses for possible leaks in the future.

My questions are:

What weight, type (syn or etc...), brand of oil I should use (recommendations)?

Am I forgetting anything else on this list to replace?

Thanks,

David

Try searching for it. There's a ton of information on the forum. Also the FAQ's are great.

That being said, I use Valvoline 10w 30. It breaks down quick, but I change it every 1500 miles at the longest.

well you could check this out about what oil to use because there was a thread about it:
https://www.rx7club.com/new-member-rx-7-technical-256/oil-good-use-801575/
and then you probably could go with the reliability mods:

Yea I went through all of those links before and try to do a search through this entire forum but none of those included oil weight. The first one about oil is referring to an FC (https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=801575). On the side note of reliability mods, I do have a set of gauges sitting in my room that I will be installing within the next month or so (Autometer Cobalt: Wideband A/F, Full sweep Boost/Vac, Oil Pressure, Oil Temp, and Water Temp).

Thanks,

Dave

If you plan on putting Full Synthetic Oil in I'd go with Mobile 1, It's not too expensive and I think a lot of the members on the forum have used it with good results (I used it until I upgraded my turbo's and had to switch back to Mineral Oil). If you choose to use Mineral Oil I'd say that Castrol GTX is a good one. I'm currently using that on mine and have had no ill effects.

Wideband - Not entirely necessary if you don't plan on pushing the car hard, used primarily for tuning purposes.

Boost Guage - DEF NEED!

Oil Pressure - Stock one is fine, unless the sending unit goes bad. No need to double up on gauges.

Oil Temp - Def a good one to have!

Water Temp - Good, but will be made redundant if you get a PFC/Commander.

Oil..
Royal Purple 20/50 hot weather 10/40 cold weather

Mods.
AST, upgreade cooler, Boost gauge, Oil Temp, and water temp gauge.. down pipe, exhaust, SMIC, and PFC..
this will give you a bit of power boost but not to much and good reliablility.

Slightly disagree ! A feature of a good water temp guage is an alarm set at max safe levels. Many an RX7 engine has cooked because the driver was not aware of the rising temps. I would always recommend a water temp guage with a load alarm

i slightly disagree with you, if you can look at the PFC at a slant and see it read 110C and pull over then there is something wrong with the drive and not the car....

Well I have these gauges already sitting around since I decided to not put them in my current Jetta. I guess I'll replace the Water Temp guage with something else when I get the PFC.

So it is okay to use Royal Purple 10W-30? It is currently all stock right now but will be lightly modded with simple bolt ons by end of next year.
