New here, need info please

First off, couple questions.
I am currently looking at trading my 97 cobra for a 93 FD. Milage is at 102,000 and the new motor has less than 4000 miles. Its silver with black interior. New paint also. Mods are
R1 wing
coilovers(tein)
brembo rotors
down pipe
high flow cat
racing beat catback
denso iridium plugs
all new hoses(vacume, etc..)
The car has no aftermarket computer. Is this too many mods for a car to not have something like a power fc or whatever? The owner said he restricted the line to the wastegate to keep boost down a couple pounds.
It was dyno'ed at 300rwhp(about 350 flywheel)
I am trading my 1997 cobra for this car, hopefully. I will be doing my own motor work also.
Oh,and he said the 5th gear is a little tricky to get into(syncro's?)
Now, on to my questions.
How well do the rears hold up in these cars?
Tranny's?
What is the factory gearing in the rear?
Do they respond well to nitrous?
I know the killer(from what I understand, correct me if Im wrong) is heat. The n20 would keep some heat out of the engine.
The car has a small smoke when started when its cold, then goes right away. Is this a sign of a turbo failure? I am getting a single turbo swap(minus the turbo) with teh car also, so thats not a problem at all.
Thanks in advance guys!
It will be a different experience driving and racing one of these cars, thats for sure. I have had a LOT of fast mustangs(90 coupe with a 347ci motor and a procharger, 94 cobra with a T76 cartec turbo kit, etc..)
My 97 is a different moster all together though, as its powerband is from 4000-7000. Its the hardest to drive due to its weird curve.
Oh, and brakes and stuff? What is stock on these? What size rotors and brakes?
My cobra has 11" rear, and 13" front with 38mm 4 piston calipers. Thanks guys!!!

syncro problem... typical
manual LSD, tranny... bulletproof (400+ HP)
nitrous = new motor... unless you are VERY experienced in tuning
smoke at startup is normal
front brakes = 11" (i think) rears = 10" (also a rough guess)

enjoy the new toy!!

Thanks wiblergt.
Why is the nitrous so bad for these cars?
And, as a side note, why couldnt you use just one fuel selonoid to deliver more fuel, since that seems to be a big issue with these cars? Run a nitrous mastermind with a gradual up increase in fuel, you can taylor it to your needs.
I may give it a try anyway, since I have most of it lying around my house allready, lol.
Good deal on the tranny/rear being strong
I sure hope I am impressed with the cars running state, I know I love the exterior.
If/when I get it, I can promice you I will be an avid poster here, as I have built most of my cars myself, and Im a mechanic at Eaton Automotive(we make LSD's and the blowers on the lightning truck and 03 cobra's)
I work with tolerances of .000040 of an inch, or 1/.00004
I cant wait to tear into one of the engines!!! I dont want to blow it up, but....

Stock Torsen Differentials have been known to break easily with wheel hop. Getting a good LSD is a must for drag racing.

Tranny's hold up to ALOT of abuse...just don't miss gears and you'll be fine.

Factory gearing should be 4.1 final for a manual, 3.9 for an auto.

I don't recommend using both turbo AND nitrous in the same car...at least not at the top end. But to each his own. There have been cars running 9's with ONLY nitrous.

Light smoke upon startup that goes away AND STAYS AWAY is fine.

Single Turbo = FUN. I like to Rev to 9500 rpms...but that's just me.

Brakes = Great for stock, even at slightly higher power levels than stock.

Rebuilding yourself is CAKE...seriously.

Sounds good also jspec.
I cant wait to get into the rotary world, been waiting a long time for one. I allways seem to end up back in a familiar mustang, so go figure. I want sleep at all tonight prolly!
Does anyone have a link to a couple pics and procedures to rebuild a 3rd gen RX7 motor?

I am not sure about the rwhp of that car, even with that mods and a ported engine you can not reach 300 rwhp and less without a couple of pounds.

About the 5th gear little tricky that means that the 5th gear synchro is broken so you need to tear down the tranny and replace it. Replace the shift select spindle too; it is a TSB. look at:
http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/s...t_spindle.html

get some reliability mods before power mods:
*radiator, upgraded ecu, fuel pump, etc.

With a ported engine, the power band will be from 4000 to 7000+ too. You´re not going to feel something strong before 4000-4500 rpm.

About the smoke is normal when it starts at once and it is not a dense white smoke like fog that cover all the parking area.

The R1 is my favorite -2 oil coolers-, mine is a touring.

Gain power like a man do not use nitro, with the proper mods the engine can hold a lot psi.

good luck,
RT.

Lots of great info here guys!
He said the dyno was before he cut back on some of the boost.
Keep it coming, and wish me luck!

Back from the test drive guys.
I have to say I am not impressed with this particular car. There is pretty much noway I would trade mine for it. It had the grind in 5th gear, the second turbo would not "kick in", and a few other things were wrong with it. Im not looking for a perfect car, but dont want someone elses problem if you know what I mean.
Awsome looking car, and handled like it was on rails! This one car will not deter me from looking either. I just couldnt see myself trading my perfect running cobra which is 4 years newer for this car, no matter how good it looks.
Overall, a good experience for me.
Oh, and the smoke did NOT stop after a few minuits.

Yea, I dont know how someone could have such a car, and not fix the things wrong with it.
My check engine light comes on everyonce in a while, and it kills me that I havnt been able to locate the part needed to fix it. Its the charcoal canister that catches the excess fumes from the gastank, and none of the local places seem to have it!!
I will keep looking, and any info/leads any of you have would be great!

Oh, and I was thinking.. Why couldnt someone hook up a fuel selonoid(from a nitrous kit) and use it to supply extra fuel? You could use a nitrous mastermind and set it to gradually increase the flow or whatever you want it to do. Only run the fuel selonoid thoug.
Just a thought, anyone ever tried?
