New Center console
I was looking into my options (searched the forum) for fixing the center console (peeling). I decided to order a new one from Mazda. Cost ~$75 new. This is for a 93 (the 94 is different). Anyway, the part came in and the damn thing looked like it was a 94 that had been sanded and painted flat black. Didn't have the soft-coating on it like the original one (or at least that's how it seemed to me). Was wondering if anyone else has replaced theirs with a new one and what's the consensus on the quality of this part?

They stopped making it. I have the same problem and I ordered the panel from Mazdatrix. They charged me a lot more than what you paid. I haven't put it on - thinking about returning it because it does not match. They can't order any other style. Best we '93 people can do is paint them or have them painted at a body shop.
Read once that lacquer thinner will take off the peeling stuff and leave the decent finish underneath. Have to be gentle with the stuff though.

the coating is a paint that protects the parts from UV rays that will fade the plastic. Plastic has no UV protection on its own. Basically they used a poor quality paint. All cars interior parts are painted (urethane or plastic) they just do a much better job with coatings technology these days. SO, as was mentioned, your best bet is to strip the old paint and repaint with Krylon interior paint or similar....unless you want the 94 rippled look. GL
