coolant issues
ok this is whats going on. my car was down for like 2 weeks waiting on an omp. so i decided to just top my car off with coolant while i was at it. topped it off burped it and so on until it was completley full. i put on the omp hooked everything back up drove my car around let it idle for like 5 minutes and i noticed coolant leaking out of the overflow tank. this isnt the first time i have had coolant problems but this is the first time i have noticed it coming form there i have replaced the ast cap with guinuine mazda and i have a thermostat i have yet to put on also from mazda. i have done numerous test to check and see if it was a bad coolant seal. checked spark plugs smelt like gas. starts up fine. pulled egi coolant slowly rises after about 10 seconds of trying to crank it. took cap off cranked the car after about a minute coolant starts to rise no bubbles just foamy looking. i have ran out of ideas of what to do form preventing the coolant form leaking out any suggestions will help thanks in advance

Silver93R1,
How old are all of your coolant lines? Have you pressure tested the system from the AST cap position? Would it hold pressure? If yes, did you try connecting the pressure tester to the fill cap and running the car? Pressure should build slowly and peak to around 12 to 13 psi before your fans kick on. Are you smelling coolant anywhere in the engine bay when the car is not running. With the car completely cool (i.e., after 12 hours plus of not running) check the dipstick in your overflow tank to see if it is overfull. If so, you need to siphon coolant out of your overfill tank until you get it down to just "barely" under the "F" on the dipstick.
Then, run the car and see if coolant STILL comes out the overflow. If so, you may have exhaust gas pressurizing your system, but I suspect you may have just inadvertently overfilled your system. Does the coolant level stay high in your fill neck when the car is cool or are you constantly topping it off with a small amount of coolant all the time. If the answer is "yup, that's what I'm doing" then you may have some small airleak in a cooling hose that will cause the engine to NOT draw enough vaccum to pull coolant back into the engine on shutdown.
Check these things out and either post back or PM me. I recently went through an extensive exercise similar to this, and I think I MAY have cured the problem. Only time will tell!
Let me know!

Sounds similar to my problem. After I found and fixed a few links the problem ended up being the cap on the thermostat housing. Replace that cap and see if that fixes it.

From what I have read here, coolant seals can go anytime after 70k, unless you have overheated, which can accelerate the process. Bought my car with 94k and by 97k, they were gone. The symptoms came rather quickly, within 200 miles and mimick what you have said is happening with yours

Sorry to hear that, dude...the RX-7 gods haven't been that fond of you lately.
Well, you got me, sacker, and Clint to cry on. After you're done, yank that motor and ol 'Kev will make it better than new.

that sucks... sorry to hear that man The only way to fix a coolant seal, is to pretty much pull the engine and get a rebuild right? sigh...
while we're on topic, to make sure I have the right amount of coolant added in (I just flushed mine), is the best way to check this just to pop the main cap off with the engine off, and just check the level visually? I just want to make sure I didn't add to little or too much. thanks.

if the leak is on the internal side of the seal then yes it can only be fixed by pulling and tearing down the motor and replacing the seal but if its external and leaks out onto the block and isnt too bad then it sometimes can be fixed with a little bit of glue
there really cant be too much coolant. just top it off, burp it a good number of times until it wont take anymore, drive it around until thermostat opens park it and let cool enough to pop the cap and top it off again keep an eye on it until your comfortable on how much is in the system...
