My oil filter is completely stuck. Help??
My oil filter is completely stuck.
I use an oil filter wrench fitted exactly to the size of my oil filter. It wasn't one of the tension ones, it was an actual piece that fits onto the filter. Anyway, It was on so hard that the piece spun on top of the filter, stripping the grip on the filter. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it off? It's really tight in there.

you can use a screw driver .. punch a hole through the oil filter .. and then twist it off

I got an oil filter tool a whille back from Autozone that's universal. You can attach a socket to it, and it can expand and contract to fit most any filter. But, the best this is when you turn the wrench, the mechanism contracts and grabs even tighter on the filter. That'll take most any filter off.
Matter of fact, here's a pic:

If that doesn't work, stick a big screwdriver into one side of the filter and out the other and use that to break it loose. This could leave some debris in the filter base area, so be careful.

I have a "persuasion tool" for times when oil filters won't budge, which is often considering I get a lot of abused/old cores that have sat for a while. IT's a pair of 18" channel locks. I've yet to see a filter that could stand up to that.
I have used the smallest one of these before, worked really well. Screwdriver method works well also. And where are your channelocks? Tool kit should always be in the car!!

I used an oil filter wrench on mine, nice n cheap, should be able to get them from any decent spares place
Only hand tighten it when you do it again, before I did my own oil changes... bloody garages always used to over tighten it *shakes fist*

Yeah, make sure you arent turning the car around clockwise, you'd never get it off that way. That might be your problem
Just as some information for the next time, take a look at the K&N oil filters. They have a nifty nut welded to the top of the filter for very easy removal with a wrench. I've just converted all my vehicles to K&N filters and it's saving me a lot of headache.
Good luck though, the tool Dale mentioned looks like a winner.
