Smile My newest mod....

Picked this up at Rotary Performance when I stopped by the other day to say goodbye to Chris and Ari before I left Texas for New Jersey:

http://www.filtermag.com/carcraft.pdf

Ari tested one out himself on his first gen and he said he was surprised by how much stuff the magnet actually picked up when they cut the filter open. It was only like 40 bones, and with a new motor i figure there are a decent amount of metal particles in my oil. Once I change it I will dissect the filter, I will let everyone know what I find out

It sounds like a good idea for the first couple oil changes on a new engine, but I wouldn't want to spend 40 dollars every time.

I've been considering one of these too. Maybe I'll order one from the website.

It's reusable:

Introducing the FilterMAG™ RA Series

FilterMAG™ has just released its magnetic filtration system for high performance and diesel fuel engines.

The reusable filter magnet system snaps to the outside of any disposable oil or diesel fuel filter canister. It is designed to remove steel particles as small as 2-microns from circulating back into the engine without restricting oil or fuel flow. We recommend our RA Series for the high performance and diesel fuel applications.

Does oil enter the filter from the center or the outside?

If oil enters from the outside then the magnet is just fooling you: It's catching metal shavings that the filter media would stop anyway, the magnet just gets them when they enter the filter but before they reach the filter media.

I have been wrapping my oil filters with magnetic tape for years. It all started with a V8 stang then it carried over to the 7s when I saw the light.

Would you be able to reuse it? Oh, yeah (edit)

I am able to reuse the tape a few times before it falls off. Plus I think that one is probably stronger then what you can find in the stores around town.

I had a huge frigg magnet on for a while and it had fallen off somewhere one day at sometime?

Looks like a great idea for new engines and one of those "warm and fuzzy feelings" for thereafter.

But if those particles are smaller than the filter media can filter, then it's doing something, even if it does happen before the oil goes through the media.

Yup, it's reusable, and the magnets are reversed so that it is only magnetized on the side that sticks to the filter.
