my dash pot...

I have low idle problem and I was told to check the dashpot. Here's the pic of my dashpot.
I just wondering how long is the rod (white) of a good dash pot?? My dashpot's rod only stick out about 2mm~
So is it failed?

it is hard to tell. however, i can say that mine is not too much farther out than that...have you screwed with it recently? it can mess up the idle in a second....

The plunger on my ('95 PEG w/70K miles) dashpot appears to extend about 8 mm when fully released. With the throttle fully closed it has maybe 3 mm still showing. The plunger can easily be pushed entirely into its housing using just your finger pressure, and when released it will quickly extend back out to the same ~8 mm length.

I've never had cause to verify its adjustment, but according to the manual the plunger should first contact the throttle linkage when a warmed-up engine's speed is between 2,600 and 3,000 RPM; ideal set point is 2,800 RPM.

ok
so u mean when the engine is running @ 2800 rpm ( the throtte linkage is lifted up). the rod will still have contact with the throtte linkage???

u know what, when i lifted the throtte linkage, the rod doesn't move at all~~

so do i have to replace the dashpot??

Depends on how your car is behaving.. is the rpm dropping real low when you come to a stop and then catching itself (rises back up)? Mine was doing that, and my dashpot looked like yours does. It is hard to fit your fingers in there, but I knew mine was worn out because I could pull the plunger out further than the position it was returning to on its own. Try loosening the jam nut and screw the dashpot all the way up, that may last you a while longer. FYI the part is $100.

The drops vary~
sometimes down to 500~
sometimes down to 700~
Today, the engine dies for 2 times few second after start up
anyway, it seems that it is easily to die. don;t wanna back up when I clutch and gear in~

O, I can fit my finger every time I want to~
So, as FDjunkie said his rod sticked out 8mm, I think mine has problem~

Hey man, the screw with the nut at the bottom in front of your dashpot. That screw should be about 90% obove the nut. Looks like it screwed in all the way.

Are you talking about his idle adjustment on the primary throttle plates? I wouldn't mess with that until you sort out the dashpot, this could complicate your problem and cause the car to idle even worse. I know I have mine pretty far in, each car is a bit different.

I can't imagine that being screwed that far down would be any good.

hum..
i have remove the dashpot and inspected it briefly. The rod does stick out 2mm. And when I pulled it out, it will bounce back to the original point, which it would do the opposite. So i think the dashpot has failed and have to be replaced.

I had a similar problem right now but it was just the clutch switch which you might want to check as well just a thought but i dont know that much. Yet.
