This Mom needs your help
I have "inherited" a 94 RX7 and want to sell it. It has not been driven regularly for about 6 months and I am sure needs a little service. My local garage refused to work on it because it has a few modifications - a down pipe, K&N intake and a turbo timer. I can't imagine the dealer is a good choice. Any recommendations for service in the Johnson Coutny, KS area? Or, am I better off selling it to a RX7 enthusiast who will do their own work?

Those modifications are VERY minor. I'm surprised that garage would care about it if you're just asking for routine maintenance.
I suggest you get an oil and filter change, and a new fuel filter would be great too. Dealer is generally not the place to go, as you already suspected. You should be able to find a KC area shop if you look around in the right regional forum here. Most of the regional forums have collected a list of rotary shops for causes just like your own.
Or you can sell the car as-is. Personally, I would have that rotary shop do a full inspection and a few maintenance items, and if it all looks good then provide that info to potential buyers.

well, if you want the car taken care of, then only sell the car to someone who has been driving for a while and understands this car is high maintenance or is an enthusiast. How many miles does the car have and does it drive? How is the shape of the body? How did you "inherit" this car? I'm not personally looking to buy it but I wanted to get some idea as to what you are selling.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will look for my regional forum and find a good shop to have it checked out.
Regarding the car, it was my son's dream car. When he went to college, it was no longer practical. He has lost interest and left it to me to sell. It has been a very good car, and to my eye looks very good. I haven't checked the mileage in awhile, but I think it is around 55k.
I do want this car to go to someone who will take care of it. My son was the exceptional teen driver who babied this car and took good care of it. The threat of losing it, helped keep him in line. But no way, would I let his younger brother drive this car - he is a different kid, good, but a risk- taker.
That's my story!

It sounds like the car is in good shape. Does it start? Does the engine run? If it does, I would be inclined to sell it as is. You're not likely to get your money back by just performing routine services.
More important is that you set a good price for the car and market it correctly so you get the full value. You sound like a nice lady. Don't let any of the vultures here low ball you and try to take the car off your hands at a below market rate.
Once place to go is www.kbb.com Enter the relevant data and find the private party sale price of the car. That will get you in the ballpark of what to ask for it.
Among the places you can advertise the sale, besides your local paper, are the For Sale section of this forum, craigslist.com, autotrader.com, and of course, e-bay. Good photos of the inside and the outside of the car are a must.
Use the personal message function of this forum if you wish to seek any other personal advice. (Don't worry. I'm not interested in buying the car.)

BTW, there are only about 76 of these late series RX-7's registered in the entire state of Kansas. It won't come as a surpise if you can't find a specialist nearby who is competent to work on them.

It sounds like you have a nice example of an RX7. I suggest fidning a place to service it without mentioning the modifications. The dealers are...not my first choice. They are simply too corrupt. But yours may not be and its hard to find someone else who knows what theyre doing. I think with a simple service of the plugs and fluids it will be ready to sell. If its a 93 you can expect about $13,000. If its an auto you can take away about $2,000 from any price. 94's and 95's bring in about $2,000 more for no real good reasons(trim piece quality and rarity). Color is another selling point but not a detractor. Mileage, solor, condition, transmission, and option package(base, touring, PEG, R1/R2) are all the main selling points it seems. The stickies at the top of this section of the forum can help explain very much if youre willing to take 5 minutes to research the car.
Please feel free to PM with more specific questions Ill be happy to help as much as I can. Or post here we have a very helpful bunch of people here.
Good luck,
Dave.

The guys are right, you seem like a nice lady, so do your homework and check with the blue book value like the guys said. You should be looking into getting pretty much the blue book value for the car because a true enthusiast of the car or someone who would really want the car would pay the extra money to get the car and have it serviced. Every month these cars are becoming more and more of a rarity unfortunately, but because they are termed as "unreliable" they have a low resale value. What sucks for your eldest son is when he gets out of college he'll probably regret giving up the car, but that's his choice (unless he looses interest in cars in general, but that's his choice).
Bottom line, post the car on autotrader.com and in the classifieds within this forum. People who really love this car will be willing to sacrifice a drive to get it. I drove 1000 miles in two weekends (500 on the first weekend to see the car, 500 the second weekend to buy the car) and blew up my girlfriend's car's transmission picking up my R1 FD (can't say she's upset though, she got my old car out of the deal for free, a moderately modified Subaru RS-T). But anyway, the point I am trying to make is cars like yours in good shape should be taken care of, make sure the buyer pays what should be paid for the car.

Another suggestion would be to have a compression check done on the engine. I don't think the dealership can screw that up too badly, but if you can, get it done by a rotary specialist. This test will give any potential buyers an idea of the general health of the engine.

PM "RTS3GEN" here on the forum. I'd help out but my garage is still occupied by my FD/yard ornament. There aren't any real shops in the KC area to work on these cars. The few that will take them will end up calling RTS3GEN for help anyway.

Wishin I Still Had The FD
If I recall, there was someone on here a little while ago who had his car worked on in the KC area by a shop called MC Motorsports? Or maybe MC Racing? It was along those lines. Does that ring a bell with you at all Mahjik?

The new owner is a former RX7 owner but to my knowledge, they don't do work on RX7s. The claim to be able to tune Haltechs. However, I don't think I would allow them to tune anything other than a piston motor as they have a LOT of experience doing that (I'll have my father's Vette there in the fall getting tuned).

They claim that they can tune rotary engines and they have a little possie that gets upset if you think otherwise. They got pretty excited when we brought up the need to have Steve Kan come to town.
