Modify stock FPR to be adjustable???

I was browsing this new online retailer, http://www.garagegt.com and came across a close-up of the HKS adjustable FPR:

Looks very much like a run of the mill stock FD fuel pressure regulator with a bolt sticking out the top. So I'm curious if anyone has done something like this to a stock FPR:

Drill a hole on the top, tap it for, say, 1/4 hex-head bolt, and add a nut for keeping the adjustment set.

If the FPR's casing is too thin to support a bolt on it's own, the a nut could be spot welded to the top.

Cranking down the newly installed bolt a few turns would displace the FPR's internal "plunger," thereby increasing the fuel pressure....

One of these days, I'll try to modify my stock FPR in such a manner and someone can test it to see if it'll work.

If anyone has already tried it, please let us know how it worked....

Because if you screw it up, you add to the risk of fire.

True, but it would be easy to pressure-test before actually installing back on the fuel rail...

well i think you cant push on the diapraghm, it has to move to regulate the pressure. what you want to do is have the bolt increase the spring pressure on the diagraphm somehow. maybe an additional smaller spring on the end of the bolt. this would only work to raise the pressure, you couldnt lower it beyond stock.

Pushing down on the diaphram will decrease the volume of the FPR chamber, thereby increasing the baseline fuel pressure.

Without having yet seen the insides of a stock FPR, I believe the diahram would still be free to move further down in the FPR body, it just can't go up any further then what the set-screw would allow.

By doing this mod, the fuel pressure could not be set lower then stock, but the whole point is to **increase** pressure over stock to allow more fuel...

The FD FPR works just like any other FPR out there. There is a spring pressing on a diaphram which is regulated by the vacuum/boost going into the nipple.

The problem with modding the stock FPR with a "chop top" style arrangement is that it will still be in its stock location. I really do not see how you can get down in there to adjust it.

It's possible on cars like my old Civic because of the location of the FPR (this is the blue AEM FPR):

On the FD, to have any kind of adjustability, you will need to remotely locate the FPR. That means tapping the FPR feed hole, installing a nipple there, and then running it to the FPR. Lots of additional plumbing is required.

On many cars, an adjustable FPR is a quick and easy mod that is very effective in shifting your whole a/f curve either up or down. However, it is not an easy mod on the FD.

i bought a "FEED" adjustable FPR from wael-el-dasher a long time ago. it seems to work and is actually a bolt on piece. looks stock, but has a bolt and locking nut on the end of it that you adjust pressure with. it bolts on to the stock fuel rail. . . its VERY hard to adjust caust that area is HOT. thats all i think ANYBODY needs to know. hahaha.

Paul,

It might be one of those things where the fuel pressure is best adjusted with the UIM off, if using this type of adjustable FPR...

Do you have pics of your FEED unit?
