Smile Mesh on a 99spec bumper?

Installed the 99spec bumper after the body shop painted it. Looks great!

Defnitely some issues with the license plate. mounting.

The main inlet duct simply clips on the the rebar and since I have an smic and not an fmic there is a void. Similar problem with the oil coolers inlets.

Would it be rice to install some black mesh (car is black) to improve the appearance of the inlets?

thanks

I wouldn't think so...just make it look like it belongs there.

I think it would be nice if you could find a crome'd out license plate with 'RX-7' on the front (kind-of like the BMW ones).

I take it your car is running fine now???

Actually, the car ran...then I sent the ring harness (by the ecu) to Dave at KD. Well he has had it two weeks now and I guess is not finished. First I waited for 1.5 weeks for him to fax me some diagrams which where not ever sent. Tried to email and left messages...no return call. Figuring he was busy, sent the harness via fedex and now two weeks later, no harness. All I wanted was to make sure the harness was correctly terminated. Frankly, I am completely fed up with rx7 mechanics/vendors. While waiting for the wires, I have tried to make sure everything is ready to go. I still have some tuning issues which nothing can be done about until the harness is returned. Had I known it was going to take this long, I would have never sent it off.

As far as the mesh is concerned, now is the time to install it if I am going to do it. So I thought I'd get some opinions.

I'm not so sure you should have sent him the harness...It might not come back.

I feel your pain however, the first part I ordered for my winter project...radiator...last part to arrive...radiator. My car sat for so long my newly cleaned injectors (well just one of them) got stuck closed...had to tear car down again.

Oh, as far as mesh...???

I think the mesh looks very nice as long as it isn't polished/raw metal. Ihor from Gotham racing has black plastic mesh on his 99 front bumper. I'm not sure what his forum name is (silver93turbo or something like that) but there are a bunch of pictures of his car floating around.

If you paint it black I think it'll be fine. You prob wont even notice it.

Your ******* kidding me right? The harness is brand new and cost $250 for mazduh dealershit in Virginia. That is definitely something I dont want to hear.

I understand one can get mesh from hardware store...is this good quality. Is there a recommendation as to which material works best? Attachment solutions?

thanks

I was just saying from YOUR previous experiences with him:

1) diagrams which where not ever sent - NO RETURN
2) Tried to email and left messages...no return call - NO RETURN
3) sent the harness via fedex and now two weeks later, no harness - HOPEFULLY IT'S A CHARM.

Would you happen to have any pics of the bumper? Preferably before you add the mesh? I would like to see how the fitting and stuff looks, as I also have a black FD and will be putting on the 99spec front end.

If I get an aftermarket bumper anytime soon, I plan to mesh it just to keep rocks and bugs out of my FMIC.

I will definitely take pics before and after. There is just so much void--at least mesh the oil coolers. If you are concerned about fit and finish...well, it fits like a condum!

What is important is to drill out the rivets from the old bumper, remove the aluminum supports structures and place on the 99spec. Fits perfect all holes match.

The 93 belly pan fits great...the oil cooler ducts do not fit so well but they dont get in the way. The black plastic panels that house the brake ducts do not fit well at all.

Overall, the bumper is absolutely beautiful. I really thought the plate would bother me...looks like it belongs there and in my state the law requires front plates.

On another note, I initially purchased the feed type II before the 99spec. Teh agressive look speaks for itself, but it is fibreglass and fit around the panels were terrible.

Definitely will post pics....thanks for all of your feedback.

Oi, apparently you have never sucked any type of animal or object into your car at high speeds. It does happen and if its plastic and hits your radiator/oilcooler, that sucker will melt! I dont even wanna get in to what happens with animals

Having a BLAST! put about 200 spirited miles on my car since the operation, transplant (FNS conv) seems to be taking well. Running low(er) boost still (10psi), and seem to be making more power (I just blew the lower IC hose (again - blew it last time at 13psi)) Thank goodness my SMIC should be on my doorstep when I get home, and I'm looking to dyno tune sometime next week (13psi). My car is pulling SO hard right now - I can't imagine 13psi kind-of scares me...

Sorry so

Thanks for asking...I'll post Dyno #'s before and after, when I get'em

The advantages I see are protecting the radiator/FMIC/oil coolers from damage. The only disadvantage is blocking some airflow (which could be worse than you think).

As far as the 'ricer' comments, I think that it's silly to call a mod 'rice' if it has a function or improves performance.

Yeah, I was aware of some of the issues with the ducts lining up, but I wanted to see. Thanks a lot for this piece of info, as it really helped out. As for the license plate holder, I've seen some with/without, and it actually looks better with one on. Besides that, it is also required here in MD, though it really depends on the cop. However, it's usually not worth the fee for not carrying one, so I don't mind the holder at all. I'm all for the mesh too, as I will be doing it myself. Just make sure to update with some pics.

About the "rice" comments, I think this rice-phobia is getting blown WAY out of proportion and it's starting to get ridiculous now. Honestly, mesh is functional in many cases, and actually looks good when done right.
