True Life, I own an FD. I've owned the car for a little over 3 years now, and I've driven it for about 6 months. lol All kinds of different builds, mis haps, shops, etc.

Whatever. I don't live in a world of hypothetics, perhaps you do. Reliability is judged in part on duration of service; 6k miles is about the time some people change their oil, but it's certainly not an indicator of reliability (!), therefore, your statement is illogical. Have a nice day.

My story...

Bought the car back in April of 07, bone stock except for a Greddy muffler. About 1.5 months after buying it (maybe 1 month of driving it), I started having issues with hot starts and losing coolant...Yep, blown coolant seal. The motor came out and was rebuilt by Dave @ KDR. However, even though I had never personally overheated it, the rotor housings had been overheated. I got lucky and found 2 VERY low mileage housings on eBay for 300 dollars, so I bought them and we did the rebuild. That was the end of summer/beginning of fall in '07.

Then in Spring of '09, shortly before going single turbo (about 1 week before to be precise), I dropped 2nd gear and hammered it up to 7k. There were no bad sounds made or anything like that, but my vacuum/boost gauge was ALL over the place when it came back down to idle. The car lacked power BIGTIME, and I knew it was blown. As it turned out, I split 2 apex seals out of the rear housing, and they took out my secondary turbo. Sucked too, because I had people on here that wanted those...made 370RWHP @ 15 psi!

So at that point I said ok, no more games...RA 3mm black super seals, BRAND NEW rotor housings (my irons were ok), etc, etc...Went through the full break in, came back down to KDR to dyno, and IATs went through the roof. As it turned out, we blew out the side seals on the dyno...Motor had to come back out of the car, luckily everything else was ok, side seals were replaced, and back in it went...After another 1k miles of break in, went back to the dyno with a new FMIC. This time the e-shaft flexed and jammed all of the seals on 1 face of the rear rotor. Needless to say, the motor came back out of the car. The seals were so jammed that Dave could not remove them from the rotor, so he had to cut me a new rotor. Also, as it turned out, it scored the iron badly, so he got me a new iron as well which had to be ported since I have a moderate street port. We then put the motor back together after buying an RX-8 e-shaft, did the break in (yet again), and came back down to dyno. FINALLY, the car held together, and has been good over since. So yeah, the motor was out of the car 3 times last summer...not fun...

This year the car has been on the dyno several times, and *knock on wood* no issues to report. I now run 6 oz of premix every tank, and keep a meticulous eye on everything. Like all FD owners, I'm paranoid as hell. The motor is also fully studded running water/meth injection, so I've tried not to cut any corners and build this thing right. Now I'm just praying she'll stay together!!!

But reliability doesnt necessarily correlate with mileage.

Otherwise it would sound like you're contradicting yourself.

IE: When you said my oil report looks like a civic just because of my driving style, driving the highways mostly to rack up miles. Rarely getting into boost etc.

Cause going by that logic, moconnor could have done 10 HARD stop and go city miles every day in the summer months and i think if the car has held up through that, or total of 6k miles in X amount of years, that is extremely impressive.

Like i said earlier, people have different driving habits. Mileage has little to nothing to do with reliability.

I could do 12k miles a year ALL highway cruising vs 6k miles of non stop city driving and i think the 6k mile beating is far worse, as im sure you already know.

Why do you think people emphasize "all highway miles" when they are trying to sell their car etc? Or what the CONSUMER looks for when purchasing etc etc.

I'm so upset with my car. It seems no matter how much money I dump into it it just can't love me back the way I do it. Just bought a new gauge cluster it looks so sweet. Now my speedometer will not work. Everything else works, but the speedo needle won't budge. Then I went to put gas in the car and the fuel lid wouldn't pop. Well you can guess what Happened I snapped off the fuel cover. I just had the car running better than it ever has been before and now everything starts breaking. I'm pretty sure its never ending. I also found out I need a new dash cluster cover because the numb nuts who owned the car before broke the old one to ****. I don't think its ever going to end and it is an on going battle in my head whether or not I should just sell the car and get something that won't do this to me constantly. I'm so freaking upset, but I love this car and I've always wanted to own one. Idk right now I'm indifferent.

Right, that's why I said "judged in part" - severity of service also comes into play

This is what makes me nervous about dyno tuning, although it's more precise. I'm sure I could squeeze more out my BDC street tune, but I'm happy with the power, and the timing is conservative (safe). If anything, the motor seems to get stronger as time goes on.

If you own an FD you gotta be prepared to drop the moolah on it - it's an expensive hobby that's for sure. There's no way around it.

I know.

But some of your recent comments question us.

As if how we drive our FD's doesnt comply with how you think it should be driven lol

Some ferrari owners dont even do 300 miles a year. And thats a ferrari lol

Yeah I can relate, what always got me back to my project, was "No WAY am I going to sell this car to some shmoe, for $6k and walk away from a perfectly straight chassis, if I'm going to loose my baby It'll be in a fireball of death, (Some Horrible Accident) where the insurance company has to buy me out, and pay through the nose in damages, so I can get some other "supercar" I've been pining away for, for years now...
It's tough to give up on these cars, especially when you find just the model / color combo you like, and fall in love with....

had my 2001 fd for since jan 2006 22000kms and almost 5 years and 50000kms later i still love it...

there were some rough times....i had decided to cheap out and buy the okada ignition amp instead of the hks twin power...the car started "breaking up" when on boost....unistalled it and had the same problem...swapped out the igniter, didnt work...eventually changed the coils which did the trick...ended up buying the hks twin power anyway...lesson learned :"if you have an fd dont be a cheap ***" lol

then had the common twin turbo sequential problems...which frustrated me and made me go single which i dont regret at all....

oh and i also had a smoking problem recently which was solved with the addition of a catch can...but despite those small problems i love my fd
