dude i use cruise control sometimes too, one time i got a cramp and couldn't keep the pedal down that long, so i put cruise on and stretched it out a lil.

if you're saying not to relax, then wtf is the point of people buying mercedes or bmws, or luxury vehicles in the first place?

its self control fools

Are you more likely to be lulled into sleep when you're relaxed or when you're active with things to do? DUH ! I love how some people will continue to argue against the obvious.

This is getting too funny. It's idiocy on parade. Read this part carefully now........

If you have a cramp to the extent you can't operate the pedals on your car, YOU SHOULDN"T BE DRIVING ! Pull over before you kill me, or someone else. How the hell are you going to stomp on the brake in an emergency with that cramped leg of yours? Jeesh!!

Your logic is nonsense. Using that logic, if you weren't driving in the first place, then you wouldn't have an accident. So don't drive at all!

Are you going to tell me that you don't listen to the radio, or talk to passengers, or do ANYTHING else that could possibly distract you from the task of driving while you're driving?

Apparently, some of us are able to use cruise control and not be lulled to sleep while others are more susceptible to sleep the minute their minds are reduced by a single input.

Now, I never said that you AREN'T more likely to fall asleep with cruise on, I said that one doesn't necessarily lead to another! Please read carefully and stop being so self-righteous and try and have a level headed and constructive discussion.

Agree...

Some people on this forum think they are the greatest drivers in the world and think owning FDs are like driving F1 cars.. Come on! There are many many people on this forum drive FD's as a daily.... And Mazda put cruise control so it could be used! What and why people using "Cruise Control" is up to them. Just be glad the guy is ok and learn from his mistakes and not shout at the guy for his misfortune.

Ah Ha! So you've just made my point and conceded that cruise control can increase the chance you'll fall asleep at the wheel. Exactly what I was saying, and it's why this device poses a danger.

You've set up a typical straw man argument (and not been very good at it).
I never said everyone who uses cruise control falls asleep at the wheel. It's just like smoking in bed. Not everyone who smokes in bed dies in a fire. But it can be a dangerous practice. And it's not the only one. Someone else made a good point earlier in this thread. With cruise control engaged, if you fall asleep at the wheel, as happened in this case, you don't even get the option of slowing down before
before your vehicle inevitably hits a tree or some other object.

THANKS PHIL ! look guys im just happy to be alive .thanks for all the comments good AND bad ....the way im looking at it is if my misfortune can keep anyone from getting hurt ..killed ..or just plain falling asleep at the wheel then ill take the flaming or anything else people have to say .

i know i made a mistake not so much by using the cruise but by getting behind the wheel as tired as i was .. point blank i knew better and i paid for it with my car luckly not with my life .

this to me is key here -- that you know it was your fault and not the fault of using cruise control. I'm glad to see you are fine, and I'm glad to see that you take the responsibility for your actions. More people should be like you instead of trying to push the blame on other people or other things.

WOW! Thanks to everyone who's watching over you.

That's one of the worst I've seen.

Cruise control is a great feature on any car. If i was traveling on the HWY in a shifter cart I'd want it.

a friend of mine, when he finds himself falling asleep in boring work meetings bites his tongue or the inside of his cheek.

that also said, it's just a good thing that noone got hurt(KITT or other motorists)

hrmmm, ive lived (and driven) in many, many states and never heard of this. It IS illegal to pull over and park/stop on a motorway.....so that could be where the confusion is, although it doesnt matter what your doing, fixing you car, sleeping...ect.......if your "parked" on the motorway, you COULD get a ticket, most of the time the cops will leave you alone, somtimes, if the car has been there for a day or two they will mark the tires/road and leave a notice on the car that it will be towed in 12/24 hrs.......but chances are, if your pulled over and in the car the cop will let you be (esp with hazards on).....if they do come up to you...im sure if you explained that you were REALLY tired and couldnt make it to the next rest stop and just had to get a quick nap....he would leave you be....or at the most write you a warning or something.

If I am driving a long distance and I get tired I slap my face (lol) or stick my head out the window as im driving.......if I still feel sleepy at all then I will get off at the next exit and hang out at a fast food place or something...and just have a cup of coffee and walk around for a few mins.... I find if I sleep I get MORE tired (i might be awake again for 30 mins or an hour....but then when I get tired again im MORE tired)....I also try not to rely to much on caffen or sugar....as it leads to the same problem as me sleeping.

That said, ive always been into sports cars and never had a problem falling asleep while driving them....but when I was younger and would do my share of driving on a family road trip (in an SUV or some large luxury car) or on a roadtrip in a rental car, like a van........the softer the ride, the quieter, the more tired I seem to get.

Ive driven a few of the bently cont. GT's, and cruising at 100mph in them it is butter smooth and as quiet as sitting in a recording studio......and even a little more pressure on the gas will have you seeing well over 120 quickly and without much drama in the way of engine/road noise or vibration.......that would be a bad car for me to drive, both tired or awake..lol

That said, cruise control is no more dangerous (when asleep) that no cruise control......sure you might say if you fall asleep you foot will come off the car, slowing you down...but it could just as easily get pused farther down...and speed you up.

There is no 'safer' way to drive while sleeping....lol

Glad your safe!

Did you have a head injury?! J/K Looks pretty mean. I hope you made a full recovery.

I have a suggestion to add to the list. If your Heat/AC is on recirculate and you are falling asleep, set it to bring in fresh air or roll the windows down. It helps me. Perhaps carbon monoxide builds up, esp with passengers??
