WOW! Definitely one of the worst FD wrecks I've seen. Glad you're okay and pretty damn lucky to have made it out in the condition you did. Be careful next time man and goodluck with new car search.

Damm, that really sucks. It think it's realy easy to fall asleep in our cars. The interior is just so comfortable. I drove 14hrs stright in mine before. Everytime I would get sleepy I would just mash the gas to wake myself up. 436whp will wake up anyone.

and if people would actually read my posts they would see that i ALWAYS ALWAYS pull over just one stupid moment in my life i didnt. and now im paying for it

that's a double edged sword though. technically it's illigal to sleep in public. pull over for a safety nap in the wrong troopers patrol route and you could easily find yourself with a ticket.

That said, I'd rather have a $100 ticket than a totaled FD and medical bills.

that also said, it's just a good thing that noone got hurt(KITT or other motorists)

LOL!!!! You seem to be going out of your way to prove how obtuse you can be. What's your first step in going to sleep? You relax. By your own admission you use your cruise control to relax. This thread demonstrates how dangerous that can be. Now I just have to hope that "psychopath X" isn't on automatic pilot around me.

There are lots of places to "relax" a bit when driving. An open freeway with little to no traffic is one of them. That's a perfect place to use the cruise control. Relaxing doesn't mean going to sleep. To me it means turning up the volume on the stereo, and enjoying a nice easy drive. Letting the car keep a steady pace. It has nothing to do with falling asleep.

Using cruise control when you are alert is perfectly safe.

You are really not going to like this :

I submit that using cruise control on a long trip will allow the driver to remain alert longer. This is because he will use less energy to drive the car while it is under cruise control.

relaxing is the first step to a lot of things, it doesn't mean that if you relax you WILL fall asleep...

Where is this stated? I've never heard this before. Is it illegal in any state?

From what I've seen, it's legal to pull over into a rest area and sleep if it's for 2 hours or less (i.e. there are signs posted that state things about 2 hour limits).

Also, forget about the ticket, I would think if you explained to the cop that you felt that you were too sleepy to continue driving any further (i.e. you've pulled to the side of the road, a "safe" distance from traffic), that you would be let off with a warning. And even if you weren't, I'm sure you could take it to court (if you wanted) to get it excused.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I usually just purposely hit the grooves on the shoulder to wake myself up. It does a good job.

Unless the freeway (or if you're not on a freeway?) you're on doesn't have them.

pull over put your arms on the steering wheel then fall asleep with your head on your arms.. in bout 15-20 min your arms will fall asleep (mine do) then you wake up from fallen asleep arms.. and you get a nice little 20 min "power nap"
