Loose Y-Pipe clamp caused some oil buildup (big pic)

I noticed the clamp where the stock y-pipe connects to the crossover tube was loose. It was so loose, that I was able to just slide the t-bolt clamp around easily with my finger! In the pic, you can see oil leaked onto the y-pipe. I've seen posts about diagnosing oil leaks around the turbos but I havent seen any pictures like mine. Does anyone know if this is a normal amount of oil buildup?

It can be, depends on how badly your car smokes, (blue clouds) and how many miles are on the turbo, mine smokes very heavily, and I know my turbo is blown, and I have a considerable amount of buildup (Smoke dust) on the rear bumper, and Oil in the intake. Under WOT it should get sucked out of the IC, and put into the intake, the question is how bad does it smoke, if it's a bit, it probhably okay, but if ou can see it behind you it's most likely a blown seal, or bearing in the turbo....

The car doesn't smoke after warmed up even at WOT according to someone who was driving behind me. The turbos have 25.7K miles on them right now.

I'm going to take off the intake pipes to examine for shaft play this weekend, not sure I can check much else with them still bolted onto the motor.

Also, it puzzled me that I've been getting boost creep lately when this in fact looks like a boost leak.

First off, that's not a T-bolt clamp - that's a plain stock worm-drive clamp. T-bolt clamps are big heavy duty clamps.

If you're blowing oil out there, you're also losing boost there. Get a 2.75" silicone coupler and ditch that stocker - that will solve LOTS of problems for you. You can get good quality couplers from either http://www.hightempsilicone.com or http://www.atpturbo.com - should only be a few bucks.

I've had problems with oil in my Y-pipe after an oil change, and I found the root of the problem. I would dump the quart of oil in while standing on the driver's side of the car, and the oil would slosh right into the PCV line on the oil fill neck. This line goes right to the intake for the primary turbo, which then blew all that oil into the Y-pipe. So, use a funnel when you put oil in the car .

Anyhow, that's dirtier than it really should be, but it's hard to say without knowing how long it took to get that dirty - a week? A year? Many years?

Buy a new coupler, clean everything up, and enjoy.

Or, if you've got a few bucks in your pocket, get the Efini Y-pipe - it's about $220-230 or so, and totally replaces that coupler with a flange and gasket.

I have an efini y-pipe but didn't want to put it on until I troubleshoot my boost creep issue. Until then, I'll tighten everything back up. I usually dump the oil in so thanks for that tip.

I don't know how long its been leaking like that but at least I can keep an eye on it after its cleaned up. I hope my boost creep doesn't get worse after I tighten it.

thanks for the input!

What all mods do you have on your car? I had some spiking issues with just a downpipe and cat-back - my boost controller totally ironed those out for a 10-8-10 pattern.

I would go ahead and put the Efini pipe on. Yes, you'll get some more flow and might have other problems, but you're really going to be chasing your tail with any sort of boost problem if you have a boost leak. Get a good boost controller if you haven't done so already.

Mods are: intake, intercooler, downpipe, catback, and PFC. So far I am using the PFC to control boost with the stock solenoid and am getting creep (PFC set to 0.7 bar I get 0.8) but no spike. I am going to try a larger pill in the wastegate line and hopefully that will help. I'd rather go this route before resorting to a boost controller.
