NY looking for head room

touring fd3s

i am 6'2 180lb

we all know not to buy touring if we want head room...but what if you did ?

in my search for head room i have modified stock seat as a experiment instead of dropping big money on pair of bucket seats and hopping i will fit in with helmet...

i still cant fit in the car with helmet on and drive it in my preferred sitting position..

but without helmet on i can now

actually i have gained almost an inch of head room with just one notch back from straight up position witch wasnt there before

now at least on the street i don't have to hyperextend my arms out to steering wheel

will post up pic as soon as i am done with reupholstering..

next i am looking to mod or remove head liner as last resort

Your best bet is going to be an aftermarket seat mounted lower to the floor. I would do that before jacking with the headliner.

This is a question I've had. What seats and rails sit lower than stock and maintain the adjustable recline?

Also I do like the sock seats, what did you do to lower them?

Stock seats are bolted down as low as they can be withou making them fixed to the flor..

I took out some of the pading from the seat and modified stock seat cover to fit..

Ditch the leather seats and find stock swede ones (the blue ones). Ditch the sunroof. Problem solved. Removing the floor mat helps for leg room also. These are you only options as any aftermarket seat is going to be higher then stock blue ones unless its permanently bolted to the floor.

I tried the whole modify-the-leather-seats thing. Not only was it uncomfortable and looked bad, but I had the same problem with there still not being enough head room. Going with aftermarket seats/sidemount rails gained me so much helmet room I've never even thought about it since.

Also, consider going with an aftermarket steering wheel. A deep dish steering wheel or using extensions on the wheel hub will bring the wheel closer to you - you can lean the seat back a little and still have good arm position.

I'm 6'6" and put a Momo d-shaped wheel in my car with an extension. Made a HUGE difference, better arm position and more leg clearance. Also helps I have an R2 with the suede seats, buying a sunroof FD was out of the question for me.

You are likely not going to find a bottom mount seat which is going to provide any extra headroom. You can use Bride or Recaro sliding rails, but they won't offer much in additional headroom. They are on par or maybe slightly lower than the stock rails but not enough to make a difference. Basically, if you want more headroom, need to do away with sliding rails period.

one of my friends has r1 with recaro seats and tilt option...they look really god and all.. but as far as head room goes they are not any better then stock...i had to recline back just to fit in ...and they are not all that conferrable getting in and out of the car with steering wheel in place.. its bit better with it out...

stock seat that i have moded i actually sit noticeably lower then stock and recaros...they really hold you in place now and they are just as bad to get in and out of the car as recaros...
they are still comfortable...

here is some pic of the progress .. its not done.. just trying them out and yea i will need a smaller steering wheel and quick release

Some aftermarket seats, if you can order directly from the manufacturer, you can have them to build a version of their seat with less foam (similar to what you are trying to do). Corbeau used to provide this service with their seats if you ordered directly from them.

I will look in to that...might work... I think I would be ok with a fixed seat at this point

Replace the sunroof with a delete panel (try Ronin SpeedWorks)

Replace the headliner with an R1/R2 or custom headliner.
The R1/R2 is not a perfect fit, but it can be made to work.

If you are trying to keep it nice for a street car, custom would be the way to go.

I gained over an inch of headroom that way.
No more slouching or hitting my head on the roof.

I have the same problem in my car, im a 6'2 also and i hate the lack of headroom..i think a extra 1" to 2" would be perfect though, my driver seat is butchered so , i planned on removing foam, and getting the mounts made to lower the seat(non adjustable of course)..
