Lean running prevention question
Question to the experienced RX-7 moders. Gentlemen I am in the process of restoring / rebuilding a 1994 model. I bought this car with a blown motor,
During the rebuild I have decided to do the following:
Questions:
Should I worry about running lean?
If I should be worried about running lean, who would you send the ECU to get remapped by, (some places like M2 will not touch a streetported motor).
Thanks for your opinions, I’m trying to come up with a budget.
During the rebuild I have decided to do the following:
- Malloy Mazda reman
- Kdrotary streetport
- M2 intake
- M2 downpipe
- Stock turbos rebuilt with ported wastegate
- Transmission rebuild
- Injectors cleaned
Questions:
Should I worry about running lean?

a good place to get your ECU remapped is Pettit. www.pettitracing.com many peoeple are running their ECU's and are very happy. they are one of the best RX-7 tuners.
i would say make an ECU upgrade your next mod, so you dont have the risk of running lean.

J&S Knock Sensor will help warn of knock but you have to heed its warning and back off immediately.
How much boost do you want to run? You may want to consider a Power FC or Haltech, which have the ability to control larger injectors plus monitor many important engine functions.

This is all that I'm going to do above. I am going to run stock ECU with stock boost. As a matter of fact I would like to figure out how to turn off the boost while I am breaking in the motor.
I just know that the engine will breathe better when I am done and I wanted the engine to 100% safe.
Oh and I have been trying for the last 2 weeks to get a hold of someone at KD rotary... Emails and voice messages. No one will return my messages.
So I checked with pettit about building me an engine... DAMN 4200 bucks for a short block with 3 mm seals and streetport. A bit expensive. I was getting all that at KD rotary and all the accesories installed on the engine for 4000 bucks...
And I know ya'll are going to be like " you get what you pay for" and I agree. It's just a little bit of sticker shock that's all.
I just know that the engine will breathe better when I am done and I wanted the engine to 100% safe.

If you're staying at stock boost, the motor will still see more air with the other mods. The ECU has some leeway from the factory but if you're spending the time and money, it's a big risk.
For stock boost, you should be able to get away with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Forgot to mention this the first time.

If you want to run minimal boost, one way to do it is have a Profec B installed and keep the power off; this will yield a max of ~7 psi. Another way is to keep your foot out of it
It sounds like you're going to have a similar setup to mine; I can give you much more feedback and advice over the phone. If you'd like to talk sometime PM me your phone #; I'd be glad to give you a call.

If you plan on opening up the intake and exhaust, you should look at getting an updated ECU from someone like Pettit or M2. They both sell the plug and play stuff so you don't need to tune it yourself.
Opening up the air flow of the FD also means that it's going to require more fuel, so the stock ECU won't be able to do the job.
As far as the boost, you could install a Boost Controller. Also, if the car doesn't have these done it would be a good time to add a Boost Gauge and replace/eliminate the AST.

I did call you about a month ago and we talked all about Dave. That conversation is what convinced me to go with KD rotary. I will have to check but I've been sending my email to the address on KD rotary's webpage, I think it was something like info@kdrotary or something like that.
