Kazoo sound...

What is that???

I just got back to the states and registered/drove my FD (new to me) yesterday. I noticed when I got on it slightly that there is a decidedly kazoo'ish sound in the mid-high rpm range. It fluctuates with throttle, I'm just curious what exactly this noise is... I assume it's normal?

Are you refering to maybe a "mooing" sound? If thats what it is then its your air pump. The sound is there because you have a open intake.

faulty turbo or failing cats causing back pressure. the noise you are hearing is the turbo blades either hitting the housing or resonating under the excessive exhaust back pressure.

that or the moo as described which is from a leak in the air pump system.

Hrm, the intakes are installed, but it is a high pitch kazoo like sound more than a "mooing" sound.

I haven't put the DP on yet, so I am *sadly* hoping that it's just back pressure from the pre-cat...

So basically kazoo = bad.

Once I get my hung over *** up and to the hobby shop I'll get the dp on, hopefully that will alleviate the problem. Otherwise I'm thinking that my tax return will be going towards a new BNR... This car is not going to **** out on me...

lol... i heard the same thing for 2months. every time i would let go of the gas i heard a moo coming from the intakes.

fixed that problem and started hearing a high pitched flutter sound, turned out the hose that goes to the stock bov had a pinch in the middle of it.... so every time i accel. or released at mid rpm's it made that sound.

it's simple and stupid, but it gave a headache trying to figure it out!

Ok, so I take back that the precat is in... I looked under the hood in daylight and sure enough, I already have a 3" stainless DP on... kid that sold me the car said it was all put back to stock. Idiot.

I noticed that the noise definitely starts when the second turbo engages. I know the engine was rebuild about 10k ago, I have no idea if they touched the turbos or not though. I'm guessing not.

Thanks for the help, I def appreciate.

Can you get it to play "When the Saints go Marching In?" That would be pretty cool.

LMFAO!!!!!

On a serious note, I have the EXACT same issue. A buzzing or wirring sound on the secondary turbo. Im assuming that I have a turbo problem based on what Ive read here. I am running all of the emissions gear (except downpipe), and the stock airbox. What I hear is not a "moo" sound. I plan to upgrade my turbos soon, but I'd be curious to know if its definetly a turbo problem.

Could that be fluttering of the "check valve (port air)" in the air control valve assembly of the secondary air injection system? (from page F-119 of the 1994 factory workshop manual)

only way to know for sure is pull the charge pipes off and check the turbos for excessive shaft play.

Well, I'm dropping the car off at RP Performance in Manassas on Wed for a wastegate port (among other things). I will ask them to check for any extra play in the turbos when they have them exposed/out for the port..

Random question, assuming that it is the blades hitting housing... is there any way to cure this, or atleast postpone their demise short of a new and/or rebuilt set???

Hehe, I love this... not even a week of official ownership and I am already looking at $3-4k of required maintenance before the car will be up to standards... this is certainly *not* a toy for a poor man =P I can only hope that dropping the cash to get this all taken care of now will mean less cost in random **** breaking/creeping up on me later down the road.

my tax return = spent... and I haven't even gotten my W-2 yet =P
