Intake Manifold Comparison?

Is the Intake Manifold from the cosmo engine better than the standard manifold on the 13B-REW? Would it be worth replacing?

from my understanding is the cosmo intake is better but the FD throttle body is better..

can u bolt the fd throttle body to the cosmo intake manifold?

imo the cosmo intake looks a lot better than the fd.

the cosmo UIM will require major port work to work with the FD LIM or some type of adapter plate. the runners are bigger but they are also offset from the FD people claim gains but persnally i think thats from having a plenum it would probably be cheaper putting a plenum on your stock UIM than making the cosmo work correctly.

It's not a simple swap:

1) the 13B cosmo lower intake manifold gasket(so if you port your motor, port match it to the gasket)

2) 13B Cosmo lower intake manifold

3) 13B cosmo upper to lower intake manifold gasket

4) 13B cosmo upper intake manifold

5) 20B cosmo throttle body

6) throttle body elbow of your choice

7) 13B Cosmo fuel rail(or fabricate your own)

8) block off the ACV on the outside of the 13B cosmo lower intake manifold

You can use the FD throttle body, HOWEVER if you go this route, you will need to get rid of your idle control valve. The reason you want the 20B throttle body is 1) It's bigger. 2) It already has an idle control valve on it.

You will need to relocate your air temp sensor to the throttle body elbow(or you could tap the cosmo intake manifold) and you will need to take off your FD TPS and bolt it up to the 20B cosmo throttle body.

Not the hardest project in the world. I think the hardest thing will be to get the throttle cable to work.

RE. The runners are all the same ID as the Xcessive. See pics http://www.rotarycarclub.com/showthread.php?t=14

Thats some good stufff...looks a bit complicated i'd really want to see a full dyno run showing some numbers on the difference throughout the whole rpm band.

Probably because it's not in those pictures.... My point was that the Xcessive manifold has equal sized runners much like that of the RE manifold (I believe they are the same ID as well).

Well I can tell you, with the RE manifold you will see gains in the mid to high end of the rpm range. This is do to the fact the RE has larger diameter, shorter runners with a large plenum area.

The REW manifold is more designed for all around low/mid rpm driveability (due to small long ID primary runners) but makes also makes good power through the mid to high rpms as well. But the REW is just not as efficient in the higher rpms due to the fact that it only has two large diameter runners with no plenum area/volume to draw from.

So my question still stands: what would be a good manifold combination to go with the Xcessive LIM?

edit - and Throttle Body...

So it would require port matching and a bunch of work to get the re uim to mate with the xcessive lim... and then the fd tb would be the better option in that regard?

How much port matching and weld-fill, and drilling, and tapping, and such are we really talking about here?

Would I see benefits with a BNR sequential twins running 17psi setup?

The Xcessive LIM will NOT work with the Cosmo 13b RE- UIM. The Xcessive LIM flange has the same pattern as the stock FD UIM. Although you have some room to port out the center runners on the Xcessive LIM, there is no way it will work with the Cosmo13b RE-UIM. It's completely off.

To answer Monkman33's question...Yes, you will need to heavily modify an Xcessive LIM to work with a Cosmo 13b UIM.

Ps: Anyone want a Cosmo RE 13b UIM, let me know.

Question:

Can you port match the 99' Spec REW LIM to accept the RE UIM

The reason I ask is that the LIM design from the 99'Spec REW LIM has a much improved flow from earlier the REW LIM design.

How does the 99' Spec REW LIM compair to the RE LIM?

Don't know anything about the 99 spec LIM except that they didn't have EGR...but what I can tell you is that if the UIM is the same as our US models, than it still won't work.

The bolt patterns and runner alignments are way off between the Cosmo 13b UIM and the REW LIM wheather it be an OEM LIM or an Xcessive LIM (which is based on REW mounting point and runner alignment)...

The hypothetical reason you don't see this is gains vs. cost ratio is high. For most of us there are easier ways to make the car faster.

The funny thing is every other make out there has someone who has done this and posted before and after results. Even the exotics have loads of these before and after results. Why doesn't the rotary community do the same thing? Sure there have been articles that have done just that, it's not common place like with other engines.

The JDM UIM is different than the USDM one. It flows better too since it does not have all the emissions stuff underneath.

I'll just comment on what I have:

Xcessive LIM, ported and gasket matched
Stock FD UIM (mine's a series 8 JDM version), secondary throttle removed, ported and gasket matched
Stock FD Throttle

there are places that port the throttle but I'm not sure about it yet.

Having owned the USD market LIM/UIM; Series 6 and Series 8 JDM LIM/UIM; externally they are different but internal runners are the same. Later JDM's has less emissions stuff hung on outsides and Series 8 eliminates vacuum pass-through ports.

I personally am using:
Series 8 LIM/UIM with Kennametal Extrude Honing and gasket matching, ceramic coated black by SportTuner.com (Anthony Bulger). Secondary throttle removed. I sold my Xcessive LIM
FD Throttle Body ported by BDC Motorsports (Brian Cain).

I've thought about Extrude Honing. I'd consider doing this (and port matching) next time I have a reason to remove the LIM. Any before/after pictures and/or recall costs?

No photos of internals.
Costs as of January this year: Ceramic coating $200, extrude hone $690, TB port $150
