Is installing a mechanical OMP possible?

Would it be possible to convert the factory OMP to mechanical OMP? I know its done all the time on S4-S5 convertions and the blocks are almost identical, but why haven't I heard of it? I only think of it because Autronic can't control signals to the OMP and I'm tired of pre-mix.

+1, premixing gets tiring fast. I'm not the most innovative person when it comes to these things, so I'm waiting on a forum member much more knowledgeable than I to perhaps figure out a solution. Until then I'll continue to pre-mix.

On a side note: How is the Autronic working out for you? What kind of setup are you running i.e. single or stock turbo; stock or ported engine, etc? My tuner actually HIGHLY recommends this ECU and I've done a bit of research in to it, but not yet enough. I'd like to hear your comments on it?

Thanks in advance buddy,

Rizwan

You would have to swap on a front cover from a S4 in order for the OMP to bolt up to it... S4 front covers have a hole for the crank angle sensor and probably are incompatible in other ways as well.

One size does not fit all! The adapter is not a direct fit for car use with stock twins, it was designed for aircraft use. It does work with some fitment. Read this thread for potential problems.

That adapters nice but it looks like that is only a tank that supplies 2-stroke to the OMP.

Alex hits closer I'm interested in the difference between S4 engine and the third generation engine.

Autronic SM4
I really love the software portion of it, I'm just not sure that the horse power that I'm going for needs an SM4... I'm going for about 400-500hp into a light drift car so I didn't need such a powerful ecu. I think it would be perfect for drag racing. The Auto Tune feature doesn't work without the Autronic 4 gas analyzer or at least not well enough to call a true tune so that feature out unless you want to spend 2,500 for Autronic's. Also the stock ignition doesn't work for it because of the strange combination Coil-Per-Coil and Wasted-Spark. I had to buy the Autronic CDI after trying AEM C2DI and MSD DIS-4 low and high output (they don't work well with a rotary). Also the OMP thing. Although it had blunders like I'm sure the other stand alones have I feel the system is a work of art and engineering. Highly recommended for the self tuner.

I just looked for the first time at the difference between the two in photos. Lets just say I completely forgot FC's had distributors... lol... I'm going to look a little harder to see if this can be plugged and still get away around it but it looks like bolt and stud locations might be different too. This is going to be tough but I’m willing to spend the time to not have to add half quarts of 2-stroke every few hundred miles.

Oh, so you're trying to get away from 2-stroke oil COMPLETELY... I believe that with that adapter for 3rd gen mechanical pump, you would still need a resevoir you would have to tend regularly.

Have you checked the stand-alone subforums? Someone is bound to have come up with a solution in there.

Um, run an ecu that actually runs the OMP?

You can regulate the mechanical omp on a 3rd gen with a cable hooked to the throttle body .The place on the throttle body to pull the cable is where the fast idle cam arm was behind the throttle position sensor .I remove the fast idle cam and hot wax rod system any way .If you try to control the omp with a split cable from the throttle cable then it will not work if the cruise control is in use . I worked this out several years ago in case my stock omp ever went out .I do use the adaptor and 2 cycle oil .The feed tank I made holds more than 3 qts .

^^^ Very helpful and interesting I never thought to do this!!! I'm assuming by what you said the voltage coming from the ecu is equal to the voltage coming from the throttle positioning sensor?

I'm going to try to find the voltage range that goes into the electric OMP to see if its the same as the voltage comming from the TPS but if anyone knows either off hand chime in please!

Thanks that's awesome!

STOP . I never said I was connecting the Thottle position senser to the stock OMP.I said you can adjust the old style mech OMP to work with a cable connected to the throttle body behind the TPS.

How unfortunate.... Oh how we hear only what we want to hear. Going to have to just look more into how they work and maybe I can come up with something.... Thanx for the info and help though.

On early 2nd gens w/ mechanical OMP, there is a rod connected to the throttle body. The other end of the rod is connected to the mechanical OMP. This is how the mech OMP is controlled, by a rod that moves with throttle position.

What he explained sounds like your best solution. On the bright side of this somewhat complicated solution, 2-cycle oil is believed by many to be much better for your internals.
