Thumbs up Initial Impressions of Idemitsu Oil

Ordered some from my bud Ari over at www.rx7.com . I was running amsoil 20w50 synth series 2000 full racing oil, but moving from TX to NJ made a difference for the worse. With the cold weather, the car seemed to rev sluggishly and just didnt seem right at all, very subtle. Additionally, my oil pressure was sky high, as in pegged at 120 psi when cruising at 3k and at ~100 psi at 3k even when fully warmed up. At cold idle I saw 90 psi and even when fully warmed up ~70 psi at idle. Not good at all---I was very hesitant to go WOT at all. This is with a newer oil press sending unit and fresh (like 100 miles) amsoil.

Switched to Idemitsu 10w30. Huuuge difference. Oil pressure back to normal, and she drives like a different car. Throttle response, accel, decel, you name it, it's like finding a long lost friend. My R1 is back . I *knew* I wasn't imagining the driveability difference. Although it sucked draining $40 worth of brand new oil, it was definitely worth it given the possible alternative.

With my FD being a non-daily driver low mileage car, and being extensively modified and driven hard constantly, it's worth it to me to run expensive synthetic.

Keep in mind I not only changed oil brands but oil weights, and these are all my impressions and opinions. As they used to say frequently on the big list, YMMV (your mileage may vary).

I've used the Royal Purple synthetic, both racing 21 and the 10w30 and have nothing but nice things to say. Well, no leaks and runs smooth but that's the butt dyno and subjective feel. What was the temperature when you were still running the 20/50 up north? Maybe it was a little to thick for the temp, but even still, once at operating temp, the oil should have been acting like normal.

Did you think people were making it up when they suggested running a lighter weight oil in cold weather?

Just messing with ya.

Man....you all are CRAZY! You know that NOTHING beats Wal-Mart's SUPERTECH brand!

Goodfella....thanks for the write-up on your oil experience. I'm not surprised that your results were as you described. I used to run 20W-50 Valvoline Racing oil in my boat, and it just didn't act right.
Man...that was some insane oil pressure you were having!

Haven't seen you post much lately, where have you been hiding ?

Btw, my dad is running 20w50 valvoline vr1 dino juice, and he has had *none* of the problems that I had w/the 20w50 amsoil. Seeing as how the two cars are parked in the same garage, that is some food for thought.

Btw, what is your real name anyway? Just curious.

Too much work. I'm switching jobs soon so I hope to have a life again (I'm actually at home, on the phone for work right now).

The few times the weather beat me to my oil change, I always had very similar symtoms (namely the extremely high pressure). IMO, I still recommend 10w30 for normal street driving, even in warmer climates. I leave the heavier stuff for track duty.
