I am new to the FD and was wondering what is the best way to keep the engine cool. Like what would be a good starter buy and what would be a cost effective way to do it for a complete stock fd? Also i would like to know what kind of guages would be recommanded and what brand and average price?

"reliability mods" The best piece of info a newbie can find.

 

Put a bottle of water wetter to the cooling system, get an aluminum AST. If you can spend money, a new radiator - Fluidyne or Koyo will do wonders.

 

Best, and cheapest, mod to keep your temps down.

You have some good advice here, check the links and do all the typical relability mods. Get a real temp gauge, the stock water temp gauge or "add engine light " comes on after the damage is done. A boost gauge is a good choice also since Mazda was so kind not to equip a turbo charged car with one.

 

Like other already said, Upgrade your:

-AST

-Radiator

-Fluids (Redline, Royal Purple, ect...)

-get an aftermarket Vented hood

-Fan mod (Great cheap mod!!)

Its always better to get your boost gauge, temp, ect.. first so you know **** is running correctly. Definitely the boost gauge!! Make sure your boosting correctly before adding any mods.....

 

What is a good brand for gauges and how much do they usually cost? As for the downpipe is it better to get a two pieces or one piece pipe?

A downpipe is only one piece. If you're looking at two sections, you're probably looking at a kit that includes a midpipe to replace the main cat. The midpipe is a bad idea to start with on a stock car, IMO. There was once a downpipe that didn't fit the flange to the stock cat very well, and it appears they simply chose to make a midpipe that fits that downpipe. Watch out for those - they may cause fitment problems. The M2, Pettit, Bonez, and other good brands generally fit best.

Gauges - you need to try searching the retailers to see what's out there. Autometer mechanical boost gauges are start at $35, and the electrical boost gauges are $175-250 but will never lose accuracy. For temp gauges, I think the reliability is less of an issue - they run $50-250. Pick a price point you're comfortable with.
