I am breaking up....

Sometimes the car will putter and backfire at low rpms. It also will putter and backfire when I rev it to 5K and above. This is happening intermittently and lasts for maybe a minute or so. Just as soon as it starts it stops and the car acts and drives normally.

ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE CAUSE?

check the alternator. i had the same problem a year ago and i tried everything from spark plugs to spark plug cables. one day a friend of mine removed the alt. from his fd (he was going to install a cromed one) and i installed his on my car because his looked almost as a brand new one, and mine was all dirty. so as soon as i took my fd out for a drive the break up was gone. my break up was from 4.5k rpm al the way to 8k rpm.

hope this helps

i think some puttering and backfiring is normal or unavoidable with an FD. Sometimes depending on the weather there seems to be condensation in the exhaust pipe. If you see water spitting out the back that could be it, unless you're blowing some other fluid out the back. What kind of exhaust/cat back system do you have? Im just curious, but also with personal experience i've noticed with lower octane gas like 93 vs 94 or anything less than 94 seems to cause the car to idle lower or putter possibly backfire more. It doesn't seem as smooth. If your idle is irratic, maybe your airfilter is dirty. especially if you have a stock box. I'm just running some basic idea's and questions or possibilities in not a shop.

Thanks for the replies....

It doesn't happen at idle only when the gas is applied. Sometimes it happens at low revs and sometimes at higher revs.

When this occured I have a full exhaust system on it...no cats

It's like it won't rev b/c it backfires then after a while everything is fine.

What are some tips to determine if the alt. is good or not?

I have a PFC, I can check the ign timing, right?

Dirty fuel filter may be restricting fuel flow causing hesitation,.... not sure it would associated with backfiring though??

I will check the fuel filter.

I have a boost gauge and controller. I am afraid I did not notice what the boost was at when the sputerring occured.

I am going to change the plugs and wires first and then go from there.

Thanks again...
