Search for someone who builds automatic race trannys. They can be built strong enough to withstand that much HP. I don't believe anyone has gone there yet. Would be interesting to see that set up. If you want the builder for the tranny I can find out. Ric Stephens, the guy in Ari's class, is has switched the tranny in his purple miata to an automatic because he kept breaking manual tranny's. Builder assured him the tranny would NEVER break.

This post is for my 55 year old brother. He is looking at this config:

mods: Atkins Street Port,
XS T04E Turbo,
AEM EMS,
1200cc injectors,
Racing fuel pump,
Large SMIC,
SS MP,
SS cat-back

I think it would be kool to have a 12second 115mph FD auto out there.

You can make fun all you want. He has a mint '66 Dodge Hemi 4-speed. He knows how to drive a stick. He has a boat load of drag trophies for the Hemi from the 60's.

Thanx for all your help

Ken

I think your best bet is to contact a few of the Supra shops that have built auto MKIVs with over 800hp. Being that they are obviously in the import scene, I would see them as a good place to start. I'm sure one of them would at least have info on a shop that would be able to modify, if necessary, an FDs auto tranny.

Good luck.

Rotaryextreme has a T51 Kai turbo kit with his auto. Don't know if it's 500 rwhp, but its probably close to that at the flywheel.

Another option is to put a chevy derived tranny in using an adaptor, like here.

PM me if you need the contact info on this.

Isn't there a import automatic tranny building company called "level 10"? I know they sell automatic supra tranny parts, and built them, and I am thinking maybe they did/do automatice rx7 trannys too. Or as stated above you could go with a GM T350 I am sure or something like that, but I don't know how much hp you would lose going through the tranny getting the power to the rear wheels. Plus you would need an adapter.

A very good friend of mine has a 9sec street Supra that has an automatic Level 10 modified transmission in it and it's proven very strong and reliable, I spoke to the guy at Level 10 and he stated to me that the FD tranny can be made just as strong, contact them with what you wanna do and they can help you. BTW, just to let all you out there know, in theory an automatic RX7 with a single turbo will actually be FASTER than a 5speed due to the fact that it won't lose boost inbetween shifts, and also it will leave with boost on the line due to the fact that you can build load an auto tranny, and it will be more consistant. Only problem with this configuration is the whole ECU thing, just my 2cents.

Yep there were several people that took level 10 to court because their trannies failed many many times.

Very good insight. Auto get loaded up at the line(no turbo lag) and off you go. No missed shifts. Faster shifts than a stick with the right tranny mods. Lose only about 5% power over a stick. We are hoping the new AEM EMS can handle the auto - single turbo. Like I said consistent drag times and it would be neat having a 12second 115mph auto FD. That's in the same area as a new Z06 and they only turn those times when the driver is right on. Hard to do with all that torque and get a good launch.

Yeah those "bad things" that you heard are probably because people weren't doing the proper burnout procedures with Level 10 trannys. There's a proper way to do a burnout with that tranny, if not, it will become toast after 3 or 4 burnouts, if done properly it will last you. See the way the trannys are designed you have to let the tranny shift 1st., 2nd., and 3rd. gear while doing a burnout before allowing the car to move foward. The reason for this is because when you release the brake while doing the burnout and let the car move forward if n 1st. gear you will shock the gear when the car gets traction as it moves foward, see if you're in 3rd. gear it's ALOT more stronger and has no adverse affects on the tranny. That's the proper way to do a burnout with the Level 10 import tranny. See when Pat (the owner of Level 10) was selling these trannys to all the Supra owners, he never told them how to do a burnout properly and that was the reason for all those problems, now when he sells a tranny he actually gives a sheet with instructions of how to do a proper burnout with that tranny, which in turn has stopped all the reliability problems(as far as I know). My friends Supra with that tranny has MEGA and I mean MEGA HP #'s and the tranny has been holding up great, it drives in the street and goes to the track(or other spots, lol) at least once a week with no problems, also as a side note, the tranny has a transmission cooler, as most of you know heat is the enemy of automatic transmissions. No performance transmission should be without a tranny cooler. As another side note, Level 10 warrantied all those trannys that went bad due to all the people doing the improper burnout procedures(funny how no one mentions that). That's about what I know about Level 10 transmissions.
