How to fab a 'cheap bastard' intake yourself?

Hi, newbie here on a budget.

I have a rather large hood sitting in my house becuase I have nowhere to take it to dump it and nothing to do with it for now, but it is a rather large piece of sheetmetal.

Its the hood to a 3rd gen camaro that was replaced with another unit (I got the car with it banged up) thats a drag project.

Well, anyway, the damn things just scrap at any rate.. does anyone have the dimensions for how to fab up my own cheap bastard intake?

Spend $70 and buy a real "cheap bastard" intake mod for your stock airbox. It works great, and will save you lots of time.

$70 is really cheap

Either buy one from Adam or have some ingenuity and make your own. Don't copy other people's work unless they offer it to you.

Made my own. That **** works too, I see reduced intake temps in all types of driving (as seen by the PFC). Heat soak temps seem to be about 5C lower as well. There seems to be more low/mid/top end power as well (not that the 7 really has much low end power). I might have bought adam's intake mod, but I'm sorta a hands on type of guy. Regardless, the intake took me about 3 hours to figure out a design and make. Its probably similar to adam's intake because it utilizes the same 1.5" by 2' or so space on the side of the radiator.

Another idea I had was to take 3" flex piping and squish it down and attach it to the bottom of the airbox. However, I discarded it because I didn't feel it had any real benefit over the "gutting of the stock airbox/ ducting.

Isn't the metal from a hood kind of thick. It might be difficult to shape. It would be easier buying an aluminum or steel sheet from lowes or something. I would recommend buying a 1' by 2' sheet. You'll probably only need say 10" by 18" but better to have extra material rather than too little.

Why? If they posted here on how to do it, I don't see why you can't "copy it". Unless they have a patent on it you can do what ever you want.

I would just use Damian's template, cut off the top part and roll it over the radiator hose. Or you could really just cut a big triangle out and slip it next to the radiator, there isn't really that much to fabricate.

It takes some time to get it right. Since I made my first intake shield, over two years ago, I have improved the design several times. My latest version: "Cheap Bastard 3.0" incorporates many upgrades that I had not even considered when I first started.

Spend the money with Adam and then add your own custom touches, ducting/sheilds below to direct air into the slot, foam sealtape at airbox interface, heat sheild sheets on metal to reduce radiator heat soak. But Adams few dollar piece of alum is precut to fit, giving you more time for other use of your imagination.

Damien's heat sheild works nicely with an open style intake. Of course, then you have to buy all of the filters and attachments ..... and you won't pass smog!! How cheap are you?

Just don't attach the top of damians heatshield, the bottom works fine to block hot radiator air from going up the stock air box. If you leave a couple extra inches so that it wraps over the radiator hose, the airbox will seal against the radiator hose when reinstalled. Presto! Instant heat shield for the price of a sheet of aluminum. Its not pretty, but nobody can see with the airbox installed anyway.

I ran like that for years before I got sick of pulling the airbox on and off and replaced it with hard pipes, k&n filters, and the full heat shield from damians template.

I machined a plate to plug the stock port:

What I like about this setup is that it allows more radiator "exhaust" to move on right along.

And CNC milled the bottom part out.

I have 3 of these plates left if anyone is interested.

Although the stock inlet is restrictive, it provides an excellent secondary source for cool air to a modified stock box. The car definitely performs better with both inlets open.

Damian - thanks! I already saw it tho, and I cant delete my posts on this forum, so I couldnt remove the post

Oh, and just to get something clear... this isnt just for power, this is helping reliability, right? I'm still getting everything in order and I just want to make TOTALLY sure I know exactly what I need to look for and do before I actually get my FD - and the first things I'm going to do are reliability mods, and perhaps better tires/brake pads if the ones on the car arent all that great.

Well, that and getting used to a fast car that handles before I start piling on the power

Oh ****, just saw the edit button, and I ahd somethign to add... why are you plugging that stock intake port?

Wrong. The stock intake is very reliable.

The only reason to plug the port, is if you want to remove the stock intake tract that connects there.

I was told the stock intake would suck in hot air and that you should try to lower the intake air temperatues, and I also read some anecdote about mazda blowing up a rotary when they sucked in hot air during testing.

But eh, if Its fine reliability wise, I'll mess with it when I get to 'performance'.

Thanks
