important: remove battery neg terminal!
then:take plastic panels on steering wheel off, unbolt air bag, disconnect electrical connectors, remove nut, and PULL HARD. I'd suggest holding steering wheel to your chest while pulling so you don't slam the wheel into your body when you pull it off!

My battery has been disconnected for months now. So, take the air bag off from the back?

The bolts holding the air bag are on the back of the wheel. I'm too cheap to buy a steering wheel puller! I only pull it once in a lifetime!

What ever you do don't hammer on the shaft,it causes damage to the collapsible shaft, just a tip,I have seen guys do it and have to get a new one.

hey, i bought a cheap puller from kragen for 10 bucks, but it doesnt work with the stock fd steering wheel. the fd steering wheel has a triangular pattern, and the puller seems to only with setups with two bolts on direct opposite sides of the shaft. in short, dont buy this one if youre trying to take off an fd tiller.

just wanted to point that out. im going to do it the savage way tomorrow.

what happens if you dont disconnect the negative battery terminal??? i forgot to do that when i disconnected mine, and the airbag didnt give me any suprise or anything... guess i got lucky?

no there is only a slight possiblity that the air bag will come out .... oh yeah you can also put the nut back on the wheel on the last thread and that will keep the wheel from coming off and popping you! I've done 2 now with no steering wheel puller.

thats what I hate about things like this. Seems so simple and easy untill you actually get down to it then little problems pop up and you end up taking hours doing a job that would have or should have been a snap.

Apply both hands to the top of the wheel, and then thrash back and forth. Works GREEEEAAAATTTTTTTT.

Hey guys,

Sorry to bring an old thread alive again, but what steering wheel pullers does everyone use on the FD wheel? I can't get my wheel off for the life of me, and the puller they rent at Autozone doesn't work, nor does the Grant one from Jegs. Before I keep trying other ones and finding they don't fit right, anyone else just know of a puller that will work?

btw: be carefull when you pull it off. you do not want to damage the clockspring...

You sissies are using pullers? Just grab both sides of the wheel and walk it off...just be careful not to break your jaw when it finally gives.

palsor1, did you remember to remove the 21mm nut holding the wheel on to the hub? I used a tire iron to get mine off.

It's definitely a surprise when it finally comes off if you are just pulling by hand. In the end you will be sitting all the way back in the drivers seat with a bloody nose wondering what the hell just happened.

Mine came off pretty easily as well. No bloody nose or bruises. Someone probably removed our wheels before we owned the cars.

Sears or Autozone will have one. I have the same one and it came from Sears. There is a local tool store to me where I bought a larger one for the flywheel counterweight.

Thanks. I already tried Autozone and couldn't find one. I'll hit up Sears tomorrow. I didn't even think of trying Sears for a puller.
