HOW TO:DIY Intercoolers???
I was planning on upgrading my greddy 2 row to a 3 row, When I stumbled on a intercooler core for my FD.
http://www.precisionturbo.net/produ...c=101&dealer=no
With adding the price up for the intercooler and piping and couplings, it would be hundreds less than purchasing a 3 row from Greddy.
After all of that, I dicided not to try this DIY because of the limited info I found and the limited resources I had here if something went wrong or I got stuck.
Anyway,it has been on my mind and I would like some info on this and if anyone has pictures to post them up.
Thanks Guys
Keith

DIY projects are ultimately frustrating, ending up being more expensive than first planned but often end up being a rewarding experience. If you have a decent welder it's not a complicated task. You can purchase sections of intercooler couplings or purchase them separate. Also purchasing the pipes and pipe bends aren't that hard. Its getting everything to line up correctly and taking the time to do it all. Just purchase a few 180 degree mandrel bends.
I'll see if I can dig up a few pictures. I've helped my friends with a few DIY intercooler projects.
As for myself I just purchased the GReddy 3 row as I've grown tired of customizing every single piece on my car.

I would buy the kit, it's much easier. That's what I did. Installing it was no problem; however,
I would keep the 2 row. The 3 row is too thick for the heating problems of the rotary.
The 3 row is 4" (inches) "thick" exactly. It's made for gobbs of boost and power. After I installed it, my car ran hoter and overheated. It's think it's too much for a daily driver, so I sold it.

I know what you mean, BUt I'm gonna want to run 25 psi later on and changing is a bitch, and I know I will need to run something bigger than the 2 row. UNless I can get away with 25 psi runs on the 2 row??
Just wanna see some of the work that guys have done and "copy" what I see.

Not for custom intercoolers. I Want to get an idea and see some of the craftmanship of the guys in here. I know alot of people are interested in this topic and are willing to sweat alittle if they save couple hundred on a "needed" intercooler setup.

That's the thing, what you'll save in money (if that), you'll put in more than in time/effort and it still may not come out as effective as what's already being sold since the other companies have done a lot more than just slap a cheap core, some endtanks and piping together (i.e. testing and engineering). If you don't mind nasty piping with welds everywhere, then it might be something for you:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/just-finished-my-single-installation-405359/
However, to get piping with the correct bends so you don't have welds like that is expensive.
Look at some of the posts from Kevin T. Wyum about his ASP IC. He mentions a LOT of trial and error with the cores, endtanks and piping. Not a cheap process to do it right.

I agree with Mahjik.
Unless your time is worth a lot less and just want to have fun going thru trial and error, I would stick with something thats already made for fds.
Also, you should check the cost of aluminum welds. Most places will charge you an arm and a leg..
good luck with this project.. if you decide to persue.

hi
i went the diy way and wish i had waited an got a ready made unit, i got the intercooler for free as they sent the wrong one by mistake but the cost of the tubing and tig welding does not come cheap.
i still need to get some new pipework made up since i went single so im not far off the cost of a ready made unit now and i had to cut out the slam panel to fit.

when i got this intercooler i had no idea if it will fit, how it will fit and where it will fit, but you gota get creative when trying to go faster for less.. when you take off the bumper and test fit it you will know wha you need to do. triming the bumper is needed. also triming the underbelly a lil bit by the 2 hooks. and relocating the rad. and making new brackets i had to put teh batery in the back extend the fan wires. plus if you have twins you will loose the airbox offcorse. need to make new a/c line as the condenser will b moved with rad.its not hard but you have to do a lot of little things to fit everythign nicely. im very happy with mine. i have my ac still my rebar still even tucked my air horns inside teh rebar. only thing im going to do is get greddy elbow and straighten out the cool side piping for a more pro. look...
you will loose you fog lights.

I would love to find an intercooler like the three row size, without the price. I've seen alot of guys here sell there two row just to gt the three row. There has to be a cheaper solution. All the three row unit is , is 3"pipes and a thicker core. Pipe's you can get on ebay for about 150.00. Just need to find the replacement core and yes some fab work. And for the about of money that it will save you, it's worth the time put in.
