How to differtiate between backfiring and detonation?

i don't know what detonation sounds like but when i let off the gas from a hard pull i can hear a pop sound out throught the exhaust. sometimes i hear it in rapid sucession, like fireworks going off. ,y car runs rich i think and im getting 180miles to the tank. it even sometimes happens at low rpms like 3k when i vary rpms. how can i tell the difference between the two and does it seem like my engine is being harmed?

Youre running rich and backfiring..

no big deal really.. you will make less power and get worse fuel mileage though

Yea I want to know the same, cause when my motor is cold and I hit boost I sometimes get this and see a puff of black smoke out the back, now I know black means gas but would a dump in gas cause this?

backfiring you'll hear from the tip of your exhaust

detonation you'll hear from your engine block. It sounds like a wrench being dropped.

I don't think its good to be boosting while the motor is still cold

i agree, my car runs really rich wen its still cold and backfires a lot but once it warms up it doesnt really run that rich but backfire is minimal

boosting while motor is cold isnt good either, i've done it a couple times and i don;t really get good boost compared wen it is warm
