high mileage?
hokay, found a nice 7 with hella mods put on recently, but still origina engine at 100K...nice. Car is "said" to run smooth, and to have been worked at always at a rotory specialist shop, with recent checkup/tuneup. I'm still requiring a compression check to even consider buying this car. If compression comes back strong...what is the highest mileage you guys have heard of a 3rd gen going to before blowing? Just curious.

oh ye of little faith
my first FD had 85K before it got hit and totalled...and was still running quite strong on the original. I know, at some point, the engine will go. This is just a question out of curiosity.

i've read here of cars going up to and past 130K with original motor and turbos.
The thign with a high miles car especially if it has mods is that the reliablity of the car most likely is lower, and on top of that, the owner abused the car...if not why put the mods on right?
with that being said, check the compression and make sure the turbos are still good.
I personally wouldn't buy a high miles FD thinking the motor would last much longer.

Well mine is at 120,000 miles, and my recent compression test were at 100 psi for both rotors, but I'm completely stock no mods what's so ever. The thing to worry about is the coolant seals. Try and get the guy to start the car in the morning and see if there is white smoke coming from the exhaust, if there is this is a sign of o-ring failure. Funny thing is that when I bought my car with 104,000 miles it smoke like hell in the morning for about 3-4 minutes, now 16,000 miles later, it only smokes for about 10-15 second in the morning. Good luck man

Yeah, mine does the white smoke for about 10secs. When I'm in my car, I actually look back to make sure somethings coming out. I know thats normal.
Liemoanh, do you daily drive your FD. I do, I mainly put an average of 25 miles a day. 80k miles on her. Bone stock. I'm pretty much set on leaving it that way w/ reliability mods.

The best I've heard of is 150,000 miles on the original motor. If the compression check is good, I'd go by that. O-ring failure is tough to nail down, because it won't show up on a compression check until it becomes really bad. White smoke in the morning is also a tough test because water vapor also looks like white smoke. The first sign actually is weird stuff happening with the overflow tank and the coolant levels, but there are also other causes of that, so bottom line is there is no surefire way of eliminating the possibility of a pending o-ring failure, just do what you can.

Socallove, yeah I drive her everyday man. I bought a 90 protege so I could drive that instead of the RX7, since I don't have the cash for somthing that might break down, but ever since I got it back I've been driving it everyday. Can't resist man. I probably put over 100+ miles on her everyday.

If the coolant seals are gone, you will smell the sweet smell of coolant in the morning. Another thing to worry about is that, if the turbos are stock they should be burning oil if not already. All your vac lines are burnt to a crisp, the bushings are questionable. But who cares, buy it. They are great cars if you can fix it yourself.
